Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree or equivalent in medical laboratory science or biological science is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist by a nationally recognized certification agency is required; certification by the American Medical Technologists is acceptable.
  • A minimum of three years of certified laboratory experience is required.
  • Successful completion of annual laboratory competency testing is required.
  • The employee must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • The employee must possess manual dexterity and fine motor skills and be able to stand, walk, sit for long periods, reach, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Normal or corrected vision and hearing, including normal color vision for tasks requiring color differentiation, are required.
  • The employee must be able to work with exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, and hazardous materials while wearing common protective or safety equipment.
  • Physical presence on site is essential, and the duties must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
Responsibilities
  • Lead troubleshooting and problem solving for equipment problems, quality control issues, questionable results, and related concerns with assistance from the pathologist, and oversee corrective actions including results review.
  • Monitor the performance of all tests and procedures in accordance with applicable protocols in the procedure manuals.
  • Review and update procedures annually, ensure review by the Administrative Supervisor and pathologists when changes are made or at least semi-annually, and ensure procedures follow Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute format.
  • Assist the Administrative Supervisor in directing, assigning, and scheduling personnel to achieve productivity while generating timely and accurate test results.
  • Maximize personnel scheduling, integration of diagnostic workflow with instrumentation, and communication with internal and external customers.
  • Monitor employee arrival, break, and meal-time punctuality to ensure testing areas are appropriately covered, and assist with time and attendance management.
  • Ensure personnel competency by continuously evaluating and documenting performance, and provide input to the Administrative Supervisor on employee evaluations.
  • Assist in evaluating instrumentation and new procedures, coordinate on-site evaluation, validation, verification, and setup of new instrumentation, and serve as a primary contact for training, troubleshooting, and instrument repair.
  • Assist in monitoring section and personnel compliance with fire, safety, infection control, and hospital regulations and practices.
  • Train and teach newly hired personnel in theory and practical applications during orientation, assign mentors or serve as a clinical instructor for students during clinical practice, and participate in or assist with continuing education courses.
  • Review professional journals and attend workshops, seminars, and lectures to remain current in technical knowledge, instrumentation, techniques, regulatory requirements, and procedures.
  • Assist the Administrative Supervisor and Laboratory Management with budgets, variances, strategic planning, goal definition, problem resolution, and equipment acquisition.
  • Answer customer inquiries about test results, methodology, specificity, sensitivity, and interpretation; investigate customer complaints and initiate corrective actions when appropriate.
  • Participate in ongoing quality and process improvement activities.
  • Promote teamwork, engagement, and team member and patient safety.
  • Perform technical specialist duties requisite to the assigned department.
  • For the Quality section, lead laboratory quality initiatives including data collection and analysis, regulatory reporting, presentations to laboratory and hospital quality committees, committee attendance, coordination on quality improvement projects, and reporting progress and outcomes to the Laboratory Administrative Director.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards, DCH Health System policies, and procedures.
  • Perform essential job functions safely, identify and reduce unsafe practices, and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Interact frequently with Laboratory staff and other departments in person, by telephone, or by email to resolve patient-care issues affected by laboratory testing.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists is preferred.
  • Experience in laboratory quality management is preferred.
