BlackRock’s Financial Markets Advisory group (“FMA”) provides counsel to financial institutions, sovereigns and official institutions across a range of strategic, capital, balance sheet, risk and regulatory matters. At the heart of “BlackRock as a platform” FMA aims to build or deepen BlackRock’s relationships with our clients’ senior management, serving them on their most critical and most complex needs.
The group brings together deep capital markets expertise, complex engagement management, data & analytics skills and strategic client advisory capabilities. At ~200 team members globally, FMA maintains a “boutique” focus, working where BlackRock brings unique perspective and experience and where we can advance BlackRock’s major commercial priorities.

FMA operates as regional businesses that share a core mission and set of objectives, and partner closely on global opportunities while retaining a focus on clients in each region. The Americas FMA team has extensive experience serving US-based banks spanning G-SIBs to regionals, as well as market infrastructure providers, governmental entities, insurance companies and a range of other financial institutions.
Position description
We are seeking a Managing Director to lead our Bank Advisory efforts, with a primary focus on US and Canadian banks. The Head of Bank Advisory will be responsible for deepening FMA’s footprint with these institutions to originate and drive high-impact advisory work, and partner with business units across BlackRock to advance their commercial opportunities with these clients.
Key responsibilities will include:
• Building relationships with senior bank decision-makers (e.g., C-suite, Treasurer), working closely with senior BlackRock MDs responsible for the largest banks (e.g., Vice Chairs and country heads), and serving as a lead relationship partner (directly, and in partnership with Head of FMA AMRS) for regionals and other banks
• Sourcing and securing new advisory engagements with bank leaders in partnership with FMA capital markets experts. Target initiatives may include strategic, transactional and risk / regulatory advisory engagements; balance sheet portfolio analytics and outsourcing; operating model transformations
• Advocating new business initiatives and coordinating cross-business commercial opportunities in partnership with other BlackRock business units. Target opportunities may include investment management, Aladdin, operational outsourcing, origination and flow agreements
• Maintaining deep knowledge and serving as a go-to firm expert on bank strategic, regulatory, operational and policy trends, to drive thought leadership and commercial opportunities
• Designing and implementing a content and thought leadership plan in support of the above responsibilities
• Overseeing client project execution, in partnership with FMA capital markets experts and engagement management teams
Qualifications and key skills
• Extensive knowledge of US and Canadian bank sectors, including the interplay between balance sheet strategy, regulatory, risk and policy matters and the implications for bank strategy and financial returns
• Track record of commercial creativity and impact – ability to originate and commercialize new ideas based on a deep knowledge of internal capabilities, clients’ needs, and application of past advisory work
• Client service mindset, leading with BlackRock’s first principle – We Are Fiduciaries
• Strong partnership skills; comfort engaging clients and winning business jointly with senior capital markets experts, and ability to win trust from other BlackRock business units to help advance their business initiatives
• Strong communication skills and the ability to drive a content strategy that generates insight from information and articulates complex topics simply and impactfully to deep subject matter experts
• Leadership experience in coaching, training and developing team members, both in a direct management capacity and through influence across the team
• Self awareness on strengths and development opportunities, and comfort in hiring and partnering with team members with complementary skillsets
• Eagerness to build and appreciation of a strong team culture
• Excellent problem solving abilities, deep intellectual curiosity and excitement to improve capital markets outcomes
• Action-oriented approach and willingness to roll up sleeves
For New York City only: The salary range for this position is $260,000 - $350,000. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, and benefits including heath care, leave benefits, and retirement benefits. BlackRock operates a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy and your total compensation may vary based on role, location, and firm, department and individual performance.
