Requirements
  • Six or more years of experience in the reinsurance or insurance industry.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university or equivalent experience is required.
  • Strong personal computer skills, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience with group medical, managed care, health insurance, stop loss, or reinsurance is required.
  • Strong knowledge of disease processes and treatment plans.
  • Expert analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret complex medical and risk reports.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including negotiation, persuasion, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and mentor or guide junior staff.
Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze diagnoses, procedures, case management notes, treatment plans, comorbid conditions, and other underwriting data to assess data validity and clinical risk.
  • Identify clinical factors affecting underwriting outcomes or financial exposure at claimant and population-health levels.
  • Synthesize complex medical information into clear risk conclusions that support underwriting decisions.
  • Support clinical risk-management strategies for high-cost, complex claims by identifying cost-containment opportunities and reviewing data for medical underwriting review.
  • Refer cases to cost containment when appropriate and participate in cost-containment work as requested.
  • Triage and prioritize medical-underwriting review requests based on business urgency, workload capacity, and underwriting and leadership priorities.
  • Apply evidence-based criteria and clinical judgment to evaluate complex clinical and claims data, quantify significant risks, and advise underwriting strategy and decisions.
  • Develop and manage relationships with internal and external clients, third-party administrators, and vendors.
  • Consult with clients and teams on submitted data for medical underwriting review, program development, quality improvement, and claim issues.
  • Act as a point of contact for escalations and participate in internal and external client calls as needed.
  • Enter, validate, and analyze medical-underwriting data in the claims system while maintaining data integrity.
  • Scrub reports for medical-underwriting reviews using Excel, artificial intelligence tools, and other available resources.
  • Request and collect medical and claims data and create reports with Digital Transformation and information technology teams.
  • Identify and resolve data gaps and discrepancies for cost-containment interventions.
  • Maintain clear records supporting transparent and defensible underwriting decisions.
  • Participate in quality-assurance activities, peer reviews, and audit processes related to medical-underwriting evaluations.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert on clinical conditions, pharmaceuticals, and risk structures for audiences including executive leadership.
  • Monitor emerging therapies, technologies, and medical conditions and disseminate relevant information to stakeholders.
  • Provide clear assessments, projections, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support and explore methods and processes that improve efficiency and achieve individual and organizational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Document activities and outcomes accurately and promptly and keep management informed of progress and potential issues.
  • Maintain proficiency with information technology systems used by the Clinical Risk Management team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse or other health professional.
  • Five to ten years of clinical experience.
