Sun 13 Sep 2026 · AP News Abu Dhabi's International Holding Company is moving to acquire an 80 per cent stake in Marlan Holding, giving the investment group a controlling position in the company behind UAE-based Marlan Space. The proposed transaction is being carried out through IHC's wholly owned subsidiary International Tech Group SP LLC and remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, the company said. Financial terms were not disclosed. Marlan Holding RSC Ltd is the holding company behind Marlan Space, an Abu Dhabi-based investor-operator focused on space and space-related businesses and technologies. Its portfolio spans space systems, autonomous operations and advanced computing, placing the planned acquisition within IHC's wider push into deep technology and the expanding commercial space economy. IHC said the deal would provide a platform for investment and growth across satellite infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and emerging space technologies. The group also expects potential collaboration between Marlan Space and other businesses across its portfolio in areas such as technology, data and infrastructure where satellite capabilities can support commercial applications. "This acquisition gives IHC a strategic position in the new space economy and provides Marlan Space with access to the Group's capital, capabilities and Dynamic Value Networks to accelerate its next phase of growth," IHC chief executive Syed Basar Shueb said in the company's announcement. He said space was becoming an increasingly important part of the global technology and infrastructure landscape, with applications extending across communications, Earth observation, data and artificial intelligence. A central asset within Marlan Space is Orbitworks, an Abu Dhabi-based private space infrastructure company established as a joint venture with US-based Loft Orbital. Orbitworks was formed to manufacture commercial satellites at scale and operates from a purpose-built facility in Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi. The facility is designed to support the production of Earth observation, communications and other spacecraft, together with specialised payloads, giving Marlan Space an operating presence in satellite manufacturing as well as investment exposure to the sector. Marlan Space's flagship Altair programme is an artificial intelligence-enabled Earth observation constellation combining optical, hyperspectral, thermal, infrared and passive radio-frequency payloads with onboard processing. IHC said the first satellite has been completed and further satellites are being assembled in Abu Dhabi. The system is intended to bring together multiple sensors and computing capability in orbit, allowing data to be processed closer to where it is collected and supporting faster delivery of information to users across commercial and public-sector applications. The acquisition announcement was followed a day later by plans involving Marlan Space, Loft Orbital, French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI and other partners to develop what the companies described as a large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure in space. IHC said that programme would involve investment of up to $1 billion and would use a planned satellite constellation to run artificial intelligence models in orbit. The project, known as Altair-Next Gen, is intended to combine satellite infrastructure with onboard computing so data can be analysed in space rather than relying entirely on transmission to ground stations before processing. Initial applications identified by the companies include maritime awareness, wildfire detection, disaster response and protection of ports and critical infrastructure. Orbitworks is expected to manufacture satellites for the programme at its Abu Dhabi facility. The planned constellation is designed to scale from 10 satellites to 50, according to the companies, with the larger deployment intended to provide more continuous observation and faster alerts. Marlan Space chief executive Hamdullah Mohib said the company's strategy was based on moving more intelligence into orbit and building that capability from the UAE. He also serves as chief executive of Orbitworks. The partners have dubbed the deal, announced by French President Emmanuel Macron at the International Space Summit in Paris, the "world's largest AI intelligence satellite infrastructure." The companies already have a plan to launch ten satellites, beginning later this year. French generative AI firm Mistral will work with the partners on the deployment, as part of a plan to "build the future of agentic AI in space." The satellites will carry radar, optical, and other sensors, and are built to serve government users in France, Europe, and the UAE alongside a global base of commercial customers. Unlike conventional systems, which deliver imagery hours after it's downloaded and processed on the ground, these satellites analyze what they observe while still in orbit and transmit in seconds. Loft Orbital, which is headquartered in Toulouse, France, and San Francisco, brings the platforms, onboard AI, software, and constellation operations experience behind the program. It has launched more than 100 payloads and 20 AI missions in orbit, including a demonstration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory of a satellite running a vision-language model onboard. "For the past few years, we have been working on deploying AI applications in space and orchestrating how they work together," said Pierre-Damien Vaujour, CEO of Loft Orbital. "With this constellation, we're giving our partners building agentic AI workflows in space a true world-class satellite infrastructure. I'm excited to see the first of these satellites launch in the coming weeks, and to start deploying solutions that have never before been possible in the space industry." Services will run through an AI application store, letting customers select the models they need and run them on shared satellites. First applications include maritime domain awareness, wildfire detection and disaster response, and security of ports and critical infrastructure. The satellites are produced by Orbitworks, a joint venture between United Arab Emirates-based Marlan Space and Loft Orbital, at its facility in Abu Dhabi, the region's largest high-volume site for commercial constellations, giving the program the industrial capacity it needs to scale. "When we set out to build this program, we bet on a future where intelligence would move into orbit, and that the UAE would be one of the places building it," said Dr. Hamdullah Mohib, CEO of Marlan Space. "This is where the industry is going, and we're proud to be at the front of it. Fifty satellites, working together in groups with different capabilities as one system, make this one of the most advanced constellations in the world. This turns a factory into a national capability, and the UAE from a buyer to a seller of satellite services, with engineering skills, intellectual property, and a supply chain that stays in the country long after the satellites are in orbit." Mistral joins the consortium to provide the onboard AI models giving the constellation its reasoning and natural-language tasking capabilities, and will power services in the AI application store. French President Macron welcomed the deal, writing on LinkedIn: "By bringing together leaders in space and artificial intelligence, [France and the UAE] are showing that they can build, together, the technologies that will matter tomorrow." September 09, 2026 A two-day international space summit organised in Paris began on Wednesday amid French-Emirati efforts to strengthen industry ties and develop low Earth orbit technologies. UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, who is also the Minister of State for Youth Affairs, is representing his country at the summit, which has been organised by France and Germany. It is focused on strengthening investments in the space industry and launching a global discussion on governing space. More than 90 countries are represented at the summit, but US technology companies withdrew following pressure from the White House, which views the event as too pro-European. Germany is represented by its Minister for Research, Technology and Space, Dorothee Bar. "We will have a series of opportunities, common investments, common programmes and partnerships to strengthen, obviously, the European space industry and space research, but also partnerships with a lot of other countries," French President Emmanuel Macron said in his opening statement at the Grand Palais in Paris. The Emirati defence company Edge signed a deal with Munich's The Exploration Company to work towards a sea-based launch system based in the UAE. Edge subsidiary Fada also said it would collaborate with France's Infinite Orbits to roll out Space Situational Awareness surveillance capacities in low Earth orbit. In a further signal of tight UAE-French relations in the space industry, Hamdullah Mohib, acting chief executive of the satellite company Orbitworks, was among a dozen international chief executives who held a closed-door round-table meeting with Mr Macron ahead of the summit's launch on Wednesday. Orbitworks is a joint venture between Marlan Space and Loft Orbital. Last month, Orbitworks signed a deal with France in one of the first instances of a European government space agency becoming a customer of a satellite constellation owned and built in the Middle East. Orbitworks also shipped the Altair-1 satellite to the US for a launch with SpaceX in October. International co-operation. Dr Al Neyadi, who is among a UAE delegation that also included Space Agency chairman and Sports Minister Dr Ahmad Al Falasi, is the only Arab astronaut attending the summit, highlighting the Emirates' rising profile in the sector. Speaking alongside a panel of international astronauts, Dr Al Neyadi said the rapid growth of the UAE's two-decade-old space programme was rooted in international co-operation. "We're open to any sort of collaboration and international deals in a way to push this with the capability of knowledge transfer as well," he said. He pointed to past partnerships with Russia, the US, Japan and South Korea. In 2023, Dr Al Neyadi spent six months on the International Space Station and became the first Arab astronaut to perform a spacewalk. He has become a champion for the UAE's space programme and its astronauts. In June, he and astronaut Hazza Al Mansouri completed Nasa's geology training in New Mexico, as the UAE's space programme prepares for new destinations, such as the Moon. Around 20 astronauts are attending the summit, most of them from Western countries. Italy has the largest contingent with three astronauts: Samantha Cristoforetti, Luca Parmitano and Andrea Patassa Despite Mr Macron's ambition to strengthen the European space industry, divisions within the continent have led to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni staying away. France has led calls for Europe to increase its autonomy in space, while Germany appears less willing to close the door on SpaceX, which dominates the modern launch market.
