Torc Robotics builds software for autonomous trucks, aiming to enable Level 4 self-driving capabilities for freight transport. They develop driving systems that let heavy trucks operate autonomously under certain conditions, and they work with truck manufacturers and fleet operators to bring these solutions to market. The company integrates sensors from partners (such as Luminar Technologies) and provides ongoing updates and support to ensure reliability and performance. Unlike more general AV players, Torc focuses on commercial trucking and leverages strategic partnerships (for example with Daimler Trucks) to integrate its software into production vehicles and fleets. Its goal is to improve road safety and freight efficiency by deploying scalable, commercial autonomous trucking solutions.

Torc begins autonomous truck testing on highways in Michigan. Mar 9, 2026 Another autonomous truck manufacturer has its vehicles on the road, this time in the state well known for manufacturing vehicles. Torc recently announced the expansion of its autonomous truck testing operations to public roads in Michigan. The company said it is using the latest-generation Daimler Truck autonomous chassis based on the industry-leading Freightliner Cascadia. Building on Torc's established testing operations in Dallas-Fort Worth and Blacksburg, the company said expansion in Michigan marks a significant step in Torc's engineering presence and broadens testing capabilities. Testing its autonomous trucks in the greater Ann Arbor, Michigan area represents the natural next step in Torc's strategy to bring this technology safely and reliably to the long-haul trucking industry. After establishing the Ann Arbor engineering office last year, the development work taking place there is now "on the road" in Michigan and contributing to Torc's next generation of software. The company said this enables the validation of autonomous performance across new environments and seasonal conditions for both hardware and software performance using real-world data. "Validating our hardware and software together on public roads is a critical step in the marathon toward autonomous trucking commercialization," said Felix Heide, head of Artificial Intelligence at Torc. "Each new hardware generation allows us to further validate our AI inference models, strengthen our simulation accuracy, and ensure our autonomous system performs safely and reliably in real-world conditions." Torc, headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia, is a subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG. Looking for your next job? Careersingear.com is the go-to platform for the Trucking industry. Torc testing autonomous trucks in Michigan. Torc has announced it's now testing autonomous trucks on public roads in Michigan. The Daimler Truck subsidiary is testing its autonomous technology installed in a Freightliner Cascadia and expanding its footprint beyond the Dallas-Fort Worth and Blacksburg, Va., regions. "Validating our hardware and software together on public roads is a critical step in the marathon toward autonomous trucking commercialization," said Felix Heide, head of artificial intelligence at Torc. "Each new hardware generation allows us to further validate our AI inference models, strengthen our simulation accuracy, and ensure our autonomous system performs safely and reliably in real-world conditions." The Michigan testing is being based out of the greater Ann Arbor area, where Torc opened an engineering office last year. The Cascadia is running Torc's latest generation of software allowing the company to evaluate performance in a wider range of environments and seasonal conditions. trucknews.com is the trucking industry's leading information source, delivering vital insights to fleet executives, operations teams, maintenance personnel, owner-operators, and more.
