SK Biopharmaceuticals licenses Biohaven epilepsy drug opakalim.

SK Biopharmaceuticals licenses Biohaven epilepsy drug opakalim. Healthcare Supply Chain August 30, 2026 Highlights. * SK Biopharmaceuticals is expanding its U.S. strategy with a deal for the late-stage epilepsy drug opakalim from Biohaven. * SK will pay $400 million up front for global rights to opakalim, with additional milestone payments and royalties possible. * The drug is in Phase 3 testing for focal onset epilepsy, and SK plans a U.S. launch in 2029 if it wins FDA approval. SK Biopharmaceuticals, a South Korea-based drugmaker that already sells an FDA-approved epilepsy medicine, is expanding its U.S. strategy through a deal for opakalim, a late-stage molecule from Biohaven. The drug uses a different mechanism of action for seizure disorder treatment. According to the terms announced Aug. 26, SK will pay $400 million up front for global rights to the Biohaven drug. The payment includes $350 million at deal closing and $50 million one year later. SK could pay Biohaven up to $395 million more tied to milestones, along with royalties from sales of an approved product. A portion of those payments will go to Knopp Biosciences, which originally developed opakalim and formed Channel Bio. Biohaven has advanced opakalim to Phase 3 testing in focal onset epilepsy. Preliminary Phase 2/3 data are expected by the end of this year, and a second readout is expected in 2028. If the drug passes FDA review, SK said it plans to launch opakalim in the U.S. in 2029 through SK Life Science, its New Jersey-based subsidiary. Biohaven added opakalim to its pipeline through the $100 million purchase of Channel Bio in 2022. Analysts said the deal gives Biohaven non-dilutive capital and allows it to focus on other pipeline programs, including taldefgrobep alfa, BHV-1300, and BHV-1400. The company reported cash of about $270.5 million as of June 30. company spotlight Osirium.
