Requirements
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from an accepted certifying organization is required.
  • BLS Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations and before independent patient care at BSMH.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • In South Carolina, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program, an approved career and technical education health sciences program, a military medical assisting program, a United States Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program, or an employer-delivered training program aligned to a nationally accredited certification exam is required.
  • Candidates must maintain clinical and administrative skills in accordance with departmental competency guidelines.
  • Candidates must complete required skills or competency checklists.
  • Candidates must be able to use standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, telephones, and fax machines.
  • Candidates must have knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Candidates must be able to work with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment.
  • Candidates must be able to perform the stated physical activities and meet the listed sensory and hazard-related requirements, including manual dexterity, hearing alarms and telephones, reach above shoulder height, repetitive arm and hand movements, and exposure to infectious materials and other workplace hazards.
Responsibilities
  • Provide indirect and direct patient care within the medical-assisting scope of practice and applicable state guidelines.
  • Obtain and document patients’ chief complaints, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature.
  • Document patient and family needs and participate in planning and implementing patient care.
  • Administer ordered medications, including oral, injectable, and topical medications, within the medical-assisting scope and state guidelines.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust work hours to meet patient-care needs as directed by the practice manager.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, safe, and supportive work environment, including examination rooms and equipment.
  • Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits by setting up the visit through the appropriate platform, pre-charting, confirming patient preparedness, troubleshooting issues, obtaining the chief complaint and health-maintenance information, reviewing medications, and collecting other relevant patient details.
  • Accurately document information in electronic medical records.
  • Manage electronic health record in-basket messages according to the provider’s instructions.
  • Perform front-desk workflows, including MyChart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out.
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits and collect co-pays as needed.
  • Order supplies, track referrals, laboratories, and diagnostic tests, and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Record patients’ medical histories, vital statistics, and test results in medical records.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Collect blood, tissue, and other laboratory specimens, log specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • Provide prescription and drug-refill information to pharmacies as directed by the provider.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physicians’ instructions to patients.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Perform general office duties, including answering telephones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms.
  • Assist physicians with examinations and treatment by handing them instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing wound dressings.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program is preferred in states other than South Carolina.
  • Completion of an externship or clinical laboratory training is preferred.
  • One year of recent Medical Assisting experience is preferred.
  • BLS Basic Life Support certification is preferred at hire for BSMH locations, before it becomes required prior to independent patient care.

Steel work begins on $1.2B Roper St. Francis heathcare campus in South Carolina. * Posted on July 22, 2026 The Barton Malow | Edifice joint-venture team has begun structural steel work at Roper St. Francis Healthcare's future Roper Hospital campus in North Charleston, South Carolina, marking a pivotal milestone in the construction of the $1.2-billion facility. The start of steel work signals the project's transition from below-grade construction to its vertical rise, bringing the building's form to life on the 27-acre site. The new campus, designed by E4H Environments for Health Architecture (a MOREgroup Brand) and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will deliver 805,000 square feet of advanced healthcare space for the Lowcountry community. The building will include 328 inpatient beds, a 47-bay emergency department, 44 critical care beds, 18 operating rooms, a comprehensive imaging department and a 12-bay hemodialysis unit. Completion is targeted for 2029. Barton Malow | Edifice is using a target-value delivery method, which allows the team to adapt design components while maintaining budget and schedule integrity. The approach has been instrumental in navigating site-specific challenges, including complex seismic conditions, FAA height restrictions and a high-water table.
