Requirements
  • An accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Eligibility to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist or categorical certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 18 months of hire for the MLS Trainee level.
  • Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or an equivalent certifying organization, or certification with a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division, for the MLS 1 level.
  • One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee for the MLS 1 level; up to one year of on-the-job clinical testing experience from a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count toward this requirement.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clinical laboratory testing in Hematology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Coagulation, and Urinalysis using automated and manual methods.
  • Run samples, perform dilutions, neutralizations, ultracentrifugation, and other sample alterations, and interpret reportable ranges and results outside those ranges.
  • Perform validation, carryover studies, and research-sample testing when appropriate.
  • Run and evaluate quality control material according to standard operating procedures.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on general bench instruments and automated analyzers according to standard operating procedures.
  • Perform quality assurance procedures for flagged samples, determine when results are reportable, validate results in middleware, and report results to the Laboratory Information System.
  • Document quality-control troubleshooting and escalate issues to the lead Medical Laboratory Scientist or department manager when required.
  • Perform manual differentials, urine microscopic examinations, gram staining and slide interpretation, body-fluid counts and analysis, manual hematocrit testing, pregnancy and occult-blood kit testing, mononucleosis testing, HIV antigen/antibody testing, and rapid streptococcal testing.
  • Make and analyze cytospin preparations.
  • Perform limited microbiology testing, including organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, serologic testing, and molecular testing such as polymerase chain reaction.
  • Differentiate normal and abnormal cell morphology and identify white blood cells, nucleated cells, crystals, casts, and other urine elements.
  • Train students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, and new employees in assigned bench procedures.
  • Replenish reagents and kits, document reagent utilization, and initiate requests for new supplies as needed.
  • Troubleshoot analyzer, automation-track, middleware, and interface issues and follow up with section leads, managers, information technology staff, and vendor technical support.
  • Detect questionable results and perform quality-control and quality-assurance procedures needed to validate test results.
  • Enter quality-control results into the Laboratory Information System or applicable monitoring system and complete follow-up documentation.
  • Recognize and communicate critical and urgent results to clinical providers within the expected timeframe, document the communications, and obtain read-back or document the reason for no read-back.
  • Retrieve samples, slides, reagents, and testing materials from storage when requested.
  • Use required computer applications, analyzer middleware, and the Laboratory Information System to report results, look up information, cancel or credit results, notify providers of canceled tests, and request additional testing.
  • Operate and monitor Total Laboratory Automation systems for specimen receipt, centrifugation, decapping and recapping, aliquoting, routing, storage, and retrieval.
  • Use Command Center automation middleware and the automation track to monitor specimen flow and route specimens to appropriate analyzers.
  • Identify and resolve barcode-read failures, clot-detection flags, routing errors, and sample-integrity issues.
  • Validate and verify new automation modules, analyzer interfaces, and middleware rule changes.
  • Recognize and manage mislabeled specimens according to standard operating procedures and consult the Lab Medicine Resident on call when appropriate.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on related equipment.
  • Apply written policies and critical-thinking and problem-solving skills when new situations arise.
  • Report critical values and STAT results according to laboratory policy and ensure turnaround-time expectations are met.
  • Assist with evaluation of new tests and instrumentation.
  • Perform inventory, unpack and label supplies, rotate stock, and notify the supervisor or lead when supplies are low.
  • Maintain TempTrack for related equipment.
