Pinterest is a visual discovery and bookmarking platform where users save ideas as pins on themed boards. People browse and search for ideas across topics like recipes, home decor, and fashion, then save or share pins to organize their interests. The product works through a feed and search results that show relevant pins, with tools for creating, organizing, and sharing boards. It earns revenue mainly from advertising—promoted pins shown in feeds and search results—and affiliate marketing, earning commissions when traffic leads to retailers. The platform differentiates itself with its visual discovery engine, focus on saving and organizing inspiration, and its advertising and affiliate ecosystem that targets users based on their interests. Pinterest’s goal is to help people discover ideas they love and turn that inspiration into action by connecting users with content creators and businesses.

Why Tamara Hinckley is building a better playbook for working mothers.

Why Tamara Hinckley is building a better playbook for working mothers. For Tamara Hinckley, the road to motherhood wasn't simple. After navigating infertility, welcoming her daughter brought immense joy and gratitude. But maternity leave also brought something she hadn't expected: a destabilizing loss of identity. Hoping to feel more like herself again, Tamara returned to work early. Mostly on her own, she learned how to juggle the demands of home and career, eventually doing it so well that she was promoted to Director of Product at Pinterest while seven months pregnant with her second daughter. But returning after her second maternity leave was different. Between postpartum depression, a bigger leadership role, and the loneliness of often being the only mother in the room, Tamara found herself wondering - for the first time in her career - if she should quit. As the systems that once helped her succeed began to break down, Tamara went looking for a better playbook. What she discovered was that the women who seemed to be thriving weren't doing it all. They were operating differently, with clearer priorities, stronger support systems, and a more intentional approach to work, motherhood, and leadership. That realization inspired Tamara to leave Pinterest and start Momentum Rising, where she now helps senior women redesign how they lead and live during early motherhood. Through her curated community, she empowers high-achieving moms to keep building ambitious careers without sacrificing the lives they want to be present for. What are some of the most meaningful impacts your business has had so far? Women often come to me wondering if they've lost their ambition and leave making some of the boldest career moves of their lives. Throughout my career, I've worked with dozens of women who were convinced they needed to step back, only to realize they still wanted to pursue their ambitions and just needed a more sustainable way of operating. One burned out client, for example, was considering taking a career break until she realized she actually wanted work that felt more energizing. Ultimately, she left her company to join OpenAI. Another client - who also happened to be a new mom of twins - stopped doubting herself and stepped into a senior leadership role at a startup. A third came in exhausted and convinced she needed to scale back, only to realize she needed better systems, not less ambition. She went for the C-suite promotion she knew she deserved - and got it! The transformation is rarely about becoming more productive, but about rebuilding confidence, clarity, and a way of operating that actually works for this season of life. Again and again, I see women stop questioning whether they still "have what it takes" and start leading with far more conviction and self-trust. When more mothers rise into positions of leadership, workplaces, policies, and expectations begin to change, too. As a mother of two daughters, that mission is deeply personal to me. It's bigger than any individual client. Have you ever felt like you're "different?" If yes, in what ways has this contributed to your journey as an entrepreneur? When I was seven years old and didn't know a word of English, my family moved from Ukraine to the United States. Growing up as an immigrant, I spent years feeling like an outsider and desperately wanting to belong. That followed me throughout my career as I worked in male-dominated industries on Wall Street and later in Silicon Valley. I know what it costs to feel like the only one: the self-doubt, the constant second-guessing, and the pressure to prove yourself over and over again. As the only woman in the room, I learned how to adapt, earn credibility, and succeed in spaces that were not designed with me in mind. When I became a mother, I found myself alone in rooms full of people who did not share my experience for the third time in my life. My managers were all men, and I had very few peers who were also mothers with young children. Momentum Rising exists because I wanted to build the community and support I never had. Ambitious mothers shouldn't have to figure it out alone. What's been the hardest and most rewarding part of your entrepreneurial journey? The hardest part of building Momentum Rising has been starting over - not from zero, because I bring 15 years of experience with me, but from a place where all the old markers of success disappeared. When I worked at Pinterest, success was easy to measure. I had a big title, a large team, clear goals, and constant external validation that I was doing well. But entrepreneurship is completely different. No one tells you if you are on track, and there is no promotion, performance review, or company brand signaling that you are succeeding. I'd spent years building a career at places people instantly recognized, and learning to stand behind something that's still growing has required a much deeper level of confidence than I expected. The most rewarding part of this journey, though, has been creating something that makes women feel seen in a stage of life where so many feel isolated and ashamed of struggling. I feel so proud when I hear women say things like, "I'm not doing it wrong; this is just hard" or "I finally have a path forward instead of feeling stuck in limbo." Working with more than 70 women over the last year, I've realized the most meaningful part of this work is helping ambitious mothers feel less alone in a season where so many silently believe they are failing. Has your definition of success evolved throughout your journey as a founder? For most of my life, success meant achievement: getting into the right schools, being promoted, and proving I could advance in highly competitive environments. Growing up as an immigrant with everything to prove, external validation defined me. Motherhood changed that. After becoming a mother, I could no longer optimize for work at the expense of everything else. For the first time, I started asking different questions: What kind of life am I actually trying to build? What do I want my daughters to see when they think about ambition? What does success look like if it includes my family, health, energy, and relationships... not just my career? What surprised me most is that letting go of the old definition of success has made me feel more ambitious, not less. My ambition is no longer about proving myself. It's about building something that matters deeply while also having strong relationships, a grounded family life, and the ability to actually enjoy the life I am creating. Have you discovered any underappreciated leadership traits or misconceptions around leadership? One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that motherhood reduces ambition. In reality, motherhood often exposes how unsustainable many of its systems already were. For decades, professional success has largely been built around an ideal worker model: someone with unlimited availability, very few caregiving responsibilities, and the ability to prioritize work above almost everything else. Even in modern dual-career households, women still carry a disproportionate amount of the invisible labor at home, which means many mothers are effectively managing two full-time jobs at once. Many women mistake the exhaustion that comes from that reality for personal failure. They assume they became less capable, less driven, or less ambitious after having children. But in most cases, the ambition is still fully there. What breaks is the system underneath it. Motherhood forces Dreamers & Doers to confront questions Dreamers & Doers could previously avoid: What am I optimizing for right now? Can I keep working this way for another five years? What kind of career and life can I actually sustain long term? After taking this time to reflect, many women become stronger leaders. They develop sharper judgment, clearer priorities, and a much deeper understanding of people, tradeoffs, and constraints. Especially as the pace of work accelerates with AI, I believe the future of leadership is not about working more. It is about building ways of working and leading that are both high-performing and sustainable in the realities of modern life. What's next for you and your company? In the near term, I'm scaling my flagship group coaching program and building the kind of community where ambitious mothers feel deeply supported, understood, and less alone while navigating early motherhood and leadership. But the bigger work is changing what women believe is possible when motherhood and ambition collide: helping them make decisions from clarity instead of fear, redesign their lives and support systems more intentionally, and pursue ambitious careers in ways that actually feel sustainable. At the same time, AI is rapidly reshaping the tech industry and new power structures are forming in real time. Senior women - already stretched thin and carrying a disproportionate share of the invisible labor at home - are at real risk of stepping back during one of the most consequential shifts in modern work. My work is about ensuring the women who do want to lead have the systems, community, and belief in themselves to keep rising and shaping the future of leadership from inside the room.

Reddit is testing its first multi-advertiser shopping ads.

Reddit is testing its first multi-advertiser shopping ads. Reddit is pushing beyond brand awareness into commerce, the retail-media territory where Pinterest and retail networks already compete. official Source: Jun 22, 2026 Reddit has introduced a set of new advertising tools as part of its updates announced at Cannes Lions 2026. The rollout focuses on how advertisers can connect campaigns with discussions happening across Reddit communities. The company says these updates are powered by Reddit Community Intelligence, a system that processes billions of posts and comments across Reddit. The new tools include Shopping Listing Ads, the platform's first multi-advertiser format, which matches products from several brands to the context of a live conversation. How Shopping Listing Ads work. Shopping Listing Ads place products from multiple brands inside a single unit. Instead of showing a single brand's ad, the format matches those products to the context of a live conversation. These products are then displayed in a carousel that appears within threads where users are already comparing options. It reads the subject of a relevant discussion, and assembles products from participating brands that fit that context. For example, if a user asks in a Reddit thread, "What are the best running shoes for flat feet under $150," Shopping Listing Ads would detect that context and then show a carousel of relevant products from different participating brands, such as running shoes from Nike, Adidas, and New Balance, all placed within the same discussion. The multi-advertiser structure is what sets it apart from Reddit's existing inventory. Rather than one brand buying a placement, several brands' products appear together in a single shopping unit positioned against the same conversation. The format is currently in alpha, according to Reddit. Free-Form ad generator. Reddit is also rolling out a Free-form ad generator, currently in beta. The new format pairs information from a brand's website with related Reddit content to assemble the platform's long-form Free-form ad format. For example, if a travel brand promotes hiking gear, the tool can pull product details from its site and match them with Reddit discussions about hiking tips to create a single ad that reflects both the brand and what people are already talking about. Tailored creative assets. Tailored creative assets, also in beta, use AI to identify high-potential communities and audience personas and propose headline and image variations. This feature is available only for Max Campaigns, the automated ad product Reddit extended into app advertising in May. Redditor Highlights. Reddit has also expanded Redditor Highlights to general availability. This feature allows advertisers to embed real Reddit conversations inside their ads. Advertisers can place a summary of what users say about a brand plus a carousel of organic posts. For instance, if users are actively discussing a product on Reddit, the ad can show a short summary of what people are saying along with actual Reddit posts inside the ad, so users see real community opinions rather than only brand-written messaging. Where the move fits Reddit's ad strategy. The shopping format is Reddit's clearest step from upper-funnel brand awareness toward lower-funnel commerce. By matching products to high-intent conversations, Reddit is building toward the retail-media and product-discovery budgets that Pinterest and the retail networks already compete for. The company has positioned its platform as a place where shoppers check buying decisions. Reddit claims 1 in 5 shoppers add its name to their search queries to surface community opinions, a behavior the new format aims to convert into purchases. Writer, The Keyword

NPR's new chief content officer: 'I've been training for this job my whole life'

NPR's new chief content officer: 'I've been training for this job my whole life' Published June 8, 2026 at 10:04 AM CDT NPR has hired a new chief content officer less than two weeks after overhauling its newsroom. Nadine Zylstra is tasked with expanding audiences for the public radio network's news, entertainment and music in an increasingly digital world. Zylstra comes to NPR from Pinterest, where she was the global programming chief. She previously was the global head of YouTube Originals and a top programming executive for Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit parent and producer of Sesame Street. She currently sits on the board of directors of PBS SoCal. A native of South Africa, Zylstra says her first job in the U.S. was as a producer for the cable music channel VH-1 on celebrity news and wanted something different. She has since been hailed for her work promoting understanding across racial and ethnic divides for Sesame Street and programs for women at YouTube. "I really feel like I've been training for this job my whole life," Zylstra says in an interview. "I really do care about making the world a better place. When I am at my best, it's when that connection between what I do and what I care about really comes together." NPR President and CEO Katherine Maher praised Zylstra, noting her work at Sesame and Pinterest's reputation as a rare corner of relative kindness in the often harsh world of social media. "In Nadine, we found somebody who comes out of public media... who understands the importance of media with a mission and a purpose, and as a tool for civic engagement," says Maher in an interview. She says Zylstra will evaluate NPR's portfolio of broadcast shows and podcasts in terms of whether they are fully reaching and serving audiences, and what might be missing from NPR's offerings. Additionally, Maher says, Zylstra understands the role of "joy and humor" in NPR's programming, and how to create fresh content for new audiences as habits shift rapidly. Zylstra will start in July and be based at NPR's Culver City, Calif., office but come to NPR's headquarters in Washington, D.C. at least once a month. Gary Knell, a former chief executive of Sesame Workshop and NPR, calls Zylstra a dynamic figure who attracts brilliant colleagues. "She's a creative magnet for talent," Knell says. "She has positive vibes." Knell says Zylstra came to work at Sesame in New York City after she collaborated with the company to develop a multiracial children's show in her native South Africa. She later helped to create shows in tough spots, such as Kosovo, for the production company. "I would imagine this is an NPR move to bring in someone who is very familiar with social media platforms and YouTube content and is very able to drive content," Knell says. Pivotal moment for public media. Zylstra will oversee the leaders of NPR's newsroom, music department, podcasts and related departments. But Maher stresses that Zylstra will not be involved in news decisions. While NPR Editor-in-Chief Tommy Evans will report to Zylstra on strategic matters, he will remain in charge of the journalism, Maher says. He will also remain part of Maher's executive cabinet. "I felt as though NPR's journalism is rock solid and we've got great editorial leadership, and it was not probably the place where we needed additional layers," Maher says. "I wanted someone who was really thinking about the expansiveness of public media's mission and how we serve our audiences, how we encourage the innovations." NPR remains one of the most prestigious and wide-reaching outlets in broadcast news. More than 42 million people rely on it each week, on all its platforms, though that figure represents a drop from previous levels. It continues to win awards for its news coverage, often conducted in concert with member stations around the country. NPR's Planet Money has just spun off a best-selling book. NPR's video series Tiny Desk Concert has 12 million subscribers on YouTube alone. The network created a weekly radio show around it and sold the rights to the format in Japan and South Korea. Maher recently landed a pair of gifts totalling more than $113 million to improve NPR's tech and distribution channels, strengthen its ties with member stations and market itself more effectively. And yet, this is a daunting moment for NPR. Broadcast audiences are down throughout commercial and public media. News fatigue has set in. While NPR remains a top podcast producer, it lost its preeminent slot as iHeartRadio created hundreds of podcasts simply by repackaging all its radio shows. And then there's the political backdrop. President Trump and his allies have rallied supporters by accusing NPR and PBS of bias, a charge the networks deny. Last summer, the Republican-led Congress pulled funding from public media at Trump's urging. Before that happened, NPR received between 1 to 2% of its annual budget directly from the federal government. Its member stations had relied far more heavily on federal funds; They were, on average, roughly 10% of the stations' revenues. After losing the funds, layoffs rippled through public media. And because local public radio stations pay NPR to broadcast its shows, such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered, NPR recently determined it must cut about 30 newsroom positions through buyouts and layoffs. Greater cuts were forestalled in part by an anonymous $33 million gift - one of the two announced earlier this year. The ferocity of changes buffeting the media industry is an opportunity Zylstra says she intends to embrace. "Part of what's exciting about the moment is putting the user at the center of the experience," Zylstra says. NPR's track record with chief content officers. The position of chief content officer has a choppy record at NPR. Kinsey Wilson, an innovator in online news, was the first to hold the role nearly two decades ago. Wilson urged NPR to invest in digital content, acknowledging consumption of broadcast news was sliding. Shortly after becoming NPR's CEO in 2014, Jarl Mohn eliminated the job. He said at the time that he wanted to quell tensions between the radio and digital sides of the public media network. He also thought it important to strengthen relationships more directly with listeners. Mohn made clear he would be his own chief strategist. His successor, the late John Lansing, sought to revive the chief content officer position but NPR struggled to fill the role. In 2023, Lansing named Edith Chapin, then NPR's editor in chief, to become acting chief content officer, as well. Chapin stepped down last summer just days after the Congressional vote to undo more than a half-century of supporting public media. She said the burden of simultaneously performing two grueling top-level jobs for two years had ground her down. The way Zylstra sees it, content creation and distribution must go hand in glove. "If somebody is searching for you, you've got to be there. And all the same, you've got to understand why are you there. How does that fulfill your mission? Who are you making this for and how are they experiencing it?" she says. "I think that's how I can help our teams connect the dots across their individual workstreams that move us forward." Disclosure: This story was written and reported by NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik and edited by NPR Deputy Business Editor Emily Kopp and Managing Editors Vickie Walton-James and Gerry Holmes. Under NPR's protocol for reporting on itself, no corporate official or news executive reviewed this story before it was posted publicly.
