Requirements
  • Engineering Technician I requires a high school diploma or GED plus two years of experience in a related field such as civil engineering, drafting, surveying, or planning.
  • Engineering Technician II requires a high school diploma or GED plus five years of experience in a field associated with civil engineering, drafting, surveying, or planning.
  • Demonstrated computer-aided design and drafting, Geographic Information System, and computer experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and formal training.
  • A valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license is required.
  • The position requires work during all inclement weather, including flooding, hurricanes, and snow.
Responsibilities
  • Support Geographic Information System mapping of Public Works infrastructure data and inventory.
  • Research existing utility and site plans and compile project information to document existing conditions accurately.
  • Assist with integrating Geographic Information System data with Cartegraph work management software, Automatic Vehicle Location applications, and other databases.
  • Map underground and aboveground Public Works assets from technical drawings, construction plans, and survey drawings.
  • Field-locate and geospatially verify Public Works assets using Global Positioning System technology or digital field-mapping applications.
  • Coordinate with inspectors and surveyors to collect and verify infrastructure data.
  • Complete time-sensitive mapping projects with team members.
  • Edit and maintain large geospatial datasets.
  • Develop and maintain Stormwater and Streets location maps.
  • Develop and use Python, Arcade, and Visual Basic scripts to filter, populate, and manage large geospatial datasets.
  • Manage inventory and perform minor maintenance of large-format plotters and related equipment.
  • Manage and maintain an editor version within a versioned geospatial SDE environment.
  • Create presentation-quality maps and other GIS-based visual products.
  • Develop models and Python scripts to automate routine GIS workflows.
  • Coordinate and integrate tabular data with geospatial datasets.
  • Use ArcGIS tools for data interpolation.
  • Query the Cartegraph database using its work-management-system-specific query language.
  • Create and publish maps and GIS content through ArcGIS Online.
  • Integrate Automatic Vehicle Location data into Geographic Information System using the Esri GeoEvent Processor.
  • Use filters, scripts, searches, and quality-control tools to maintain accurate and concise data.
