Requirements
  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science with 4+ years of heterogeneous catalyst research and development experience; MS with 8+ years of directly relevant industrial or national-lab experience also welcome
Responsibilities
  • Design and synthesize heterogeneous inorganic catalysts across two families: iron-based Fischer-Tropsch systems and non-noble-metal hydrodeoxygenation catalysts.
  • Own the characterization workflow end to end: X-ray diffraction, BET surface area analysis, temperature-programmed reduction and temperature-programmed desorption, carbon monoxide chemisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in-house or with external partners), thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy; post-reaction characterization is a core part of the job, not an afterthought.
  • Deliver every experiment, including negative results, into the Experimental Materials Platform in machine-learning-ready form.
  • Support 100 gram scale-up synthesis and bench-pilot demonstration of lead candidates.
Desired Qualifications
  • Fischer-Tropsch or syngas-conversion catalyst development background.
  • Hydrodeoxygenation, hydrotreating, or biomass-derived oxygenate upgrading experience.
  • Familiarity with kinetic modeling, Bayesian experimental design, or active learning in a closed-loop lab setting.
  • Experience working closely with computational or machine-learning teams and structured data systems (SQL, time-series, or scientific data platforms).
  • Prior industrial or government-funded program delivery against milestones.

Susteon develops decarbonization technologies for heavy industries, focusing on carbon capture, utilization and storage, low-carbon hydrogen, and renewable natural gas. It licenses patented tech and works with industrial partners through joint ventures to design, engineer, and operate large-scale decarbonization projects; its offerings include advanced post-combustion CO2 capture solvents and methane pyrolysis that turns natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon. The company differentiates itself by forming partnerships and deploying solutions in real-world industrial settings rather than only selling equipment. Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by accelerating the energy transition in heavy industry, supported by government funding and DOE awards.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • DOE and NETL backing validates technical credibility and reduces dilution.
  • DAC plus conversion can improve economics for industrial customers.
  • Structured sorbents and methane pyrolysis broaden commercialization pathways.

What critics are saying

  • Bench-scale DAC remains far from commercial deployment and revenue.
  • Federal grant dependence exposes the R&D pipeline to funding shifts.
  • Incumbent carbon-capture and hydrogen vendors can outscale Susteon quickly.

What makes Susteon Inc. unique

  • Founded in 2018 by Raghubir Gupta and Shantanu Agarwal.
  • Targets CCUS, low-carbon hydrogen, and renewable natural gas simultaneously.
  • Uses licensed proprietary materials and joint ventures for deployment.
