Requirements
  • Five or more years of coding experience.
  • RHIA, Coding, or RHIT certification is required.
  • Minimum education is not specified; education must be sufficient to meet the standards for the required license and/or certification.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee coding staff through monitoring, reviewing, and auditing to ensure position accountabilities and performance criteria are followed.
  • Develop and maintain departmental and hospital policies and procedures and implement new coding-related policies and procedures.
  • Educate and assist physicians and clarify coding versus clinical issues.
  • Work with Registration and Business Office personnel to resolve claims, coding, pre-certification, and denial appeal issues, and verify that appropriate chargemaster rates are used.
  • Review medical record documentation to ensure it supports diagnostic and procedure codes billed on UB-92 or HCFA 1500 forms.
  • Educate coding staff and physicians about regulatory changes and identified deficiencies.
  • Monitor claim rejections and assess denial types related to coding, documentation, outpatient registration, and physician orders.
  • Attend meetings and provide input on coding, medical documentation, reimbursement, medical billing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Increase compliance awareness related to coding and documentation.
  • Facilitate and coordinate coding staff education regarding coding, documentation, case mix, and denials.
  • Increase understanding of APCs, DRGs, case mix, and denials.
  • Educate coding staff on documentation needed to support DRG, APC, medical necessity, ROM, and SOI.
  • Integrate documentation, coding, and oversight to ensure accurate reimbursement.
  • Review records to verify that correct codes are assigned.
  • Assist with insurance-requested audits and provide information about inaccurate or missing documentation.
  • Review DRG and APC classifications and educate staff to maximize level-of-care assignment for increased reimbursement.
  • Remain current on local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Remain current on coding guidelines, communicate with the Health Information Manager, and implement corrective actions to minimize financial risk.
  • Work with the Denials Elimination Group on physician-specific denial issues.
  • Ensure LCDs and NCDs are followed by admissions and hospital personnel so qualifying diagnoses cover tests and procedures.
  • Analyze denials and coordinate appeals.
  • Ensure corrective action is taken to prevent recurring denials.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete required annual education; work toward goals and objectives; and participate in quality-improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Registered Health Information Technologist certification is preferred.
