Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Knowledge of planned giving vehicles.
  • Five or more years of experience in a planned giving-centric or philanthropic advisory role.
  • A demonstrated record of cultivating and closing gifts.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • A strong affinity for the ministry of The Salvation Army.
  • Have or earn within three years of hire a planned-giving certification such as Certified Financial Planner, Juris Doctor, Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy, Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Gift Planning Associate, Certified Gift Planning Professional, or another designation approved by the Territorial Director of Special Gifts.
  • A valid automobile operator's license and an acceptable driving record must be maintained because the position requires driving.
Responsibilities
  • Cultivate, promote, and close planned gifts within and for the benefit of the Division or corps and units within the Division.
  • Provide estate and gift-planning education and counsel to donors, prospects, volunteers, volunteer groups, advisory boards, and Salvation Army officers and employees.
  • Advise every donor before completion of each gift about The Salvation Army's allocation procedures for unrestricted gifts and designation options for local or restricted applications.
  • Work cooperatively and productively with development staff and Divisional Headquarters personnel.
  • Provide monthly written reports to the Director of Gift Planning and the Territorial Office of Special Gifts summarizing prior-month activities and results and current-month plans, with plans, progress, and production goals.
  • Agree on personal program and gift-production goals with the Director of Gift Planning and organize priorities and activities to achieve those objectives.
  • Spend at least half of the work time visiting donors and prospects in their homes, offices, or other private places to discuss planned-giving desires.
  • Devote full time to Gift Planning responsibilities.
  • Attend orientation and training at employment and annual programs and strategy conferences for Divisional Gift Planning professionals.
  • Attend other appropriate education and training programs approved by the Director of Gift Planning and provided for in the operating budget.
  • Establish and maintain membership in professional organizations recommended by the Director of Gift Planning or Territorial Director of Special Gifts, subject to policy and budget provisions.
  • Maintain records of contacts and telephone logs with donors and prospects for tracking and donor cultivation.
  • Participate in department meetings as required or requested.
  • Follow the Division's employment policies and employment agreement.
  • Apply the financial policies governing gifts by will, trust, or similar instrument.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest and refrain from using Salvation Army contacts for personal sales or profit.
  • Maintain professional competence, integrity, credibility, and enthusiasm.
  • Do not sign documents on behalf of The Salvation Army or invest or subordinate funds belonging to donors, prospects, or The Salvation Army.
  • Do not pursue or accept personal gain, gratuities, gifts, bequests, or remainder interests resulting from donor or prospect contacts.
  • Maintain donor and prospect information in strict confidence.
  • Prioritize the interests of donors and prospective donors and avoid urging programs, agreements, trusts, contacts, or commitments that benefit The Salvation Army at the donor's expense.
  • Avoid high-pressure sales techniques or coercion when dealing with donors or prospects.
