The successful candidate will bring engineering expertise related to the design and deployment of satellite antennas and user terminals (UTs) to be used on Telesat Lightspeed Constellation network for fixed and mobile applications. They will be responsible for complete analysis of terminal antenna options as technical inputs to the deployment of UTs for Telesat Lightspeed Constellation and provide terminal antenna recommendations to the Product Line Management team to develop the portfolio of user terminals. Last bring their leadership expertise by managing technical relationships with multiple antenna suppliers and fundamental antenna technology design entities and lead supplier design reviews and participate in the planning, support and execution of antenna validation tests. In essence, they will support Lightspeed Systems Engineering in analysis and modelling of antenna operational performance for the Telesat Lightspeed Constellation.
Main Responsibilities
- Develop technical requirements for Telesat LEO Constellation user terminal antenna technology;
- Support the definition and evaluation of UT antenna requirements;
- Help define the process for UT type approvals;
- Interface with potential manufacturers of UTs;
- Evaluate vendor proposed terminal designs for performance, reliability and manufacturability;
- Propose modifications and/or new UT designs to achieve required cost, performance and reliability targets;
- Identify tests to validate system assumptions with UT prototypes using specialized test equipment;
- Lead ad-hoc engineering team(s) to evaluate antenna technologies and products;
- Stay current with the latest satellite and 5G antenna design technologies and trends;
- Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelors Engineering (Electrical, Physics, or similar) - required
- Masters Engineering - required
- PhD Engineering (research on electronically steerable antenna design)- highly preferred
- Electronic Steered Antenna design experience - preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of satellite antenna, terminal and/or satellite system design
Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience in the simulation, design and testing of electronically steerable antennas for satellite communication
- Knowledge of antenna technologies, including tracking reflector systems, flat panel antennas and other antenna technology at Ka band for mobile land, aeronautical, maritime and fixed applications
- Knowledge of satellite modems and hub technology performance
- Knowledge of satellite RF equipment including satellite carrier setup and commissioning
- Understanding of physical layer communication protocols for satellite communications
- General familiarity with regulatory requirements related to antenna transmissions
- Excellent understanding of array antenna technologies in terms functional architecture and performance characteristics
- Solid foundation in electromagnetism as related to antenna theory
- Experience with selection of RFIC and beam forming technologies required for this type of array antennas
- Experience in manufacturing techniques and processes required for array antennas
- Good understanding of antenna control techniques for beam steering and beam shape control
- Experience with integration of antennas with other part of the user terminals like the modem
- Experience in working with suppliers and vendors of antenna technologies
- Ability to summarize complex problems, solutions and recommendations
- Excellent ability to make design trades between performance, cost, power consumption, etc.
- Fluent in English, written and oral
Decision Makes
- Develops and recommends solutions for UT antennas
- Make decisions about task priorities as required in the course of leading project teams
Supervising
- There is no direct reporting staff but this role is expected to lead multi-disciplinary project teams and/or provide technical assistance or guidance to other engineers or specialists
- Supervision of suppliers/contractor during supplier facing activities
Working Conditions
- Approximately 90% of the time is expected to be in a generally comfortable office environment
- Approximately 10% of the time is expected to be work in a light industrial environment, including outdoors
- Travel, support of projects across multiple time zones and other project requirements may require overtime
- Occasional international travel may be required; therefore, candidates will need to provide proof that they have no national/international travel or visa restrictions
