Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach

UW Recreation has an outstanding opportunity for a Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach to join their team.

About this Opportunity:

Reporting to the Intramurals Manager, the Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach will play a pivotal role in establishing and shaping the future of the program. The Head Coach provides leadership for all aspects of the UW Wheelchair Basketball program, including coaching, student-athlete development, recruitment, and program administration. Working closely with the Adaptive Recreation Lead and Recreation Leadership, the Head Coach will foster an inclusive and supportive environment that promotes student engagement, wellness, leadership, and belonging.

This position will serve on the UW Seattle Campus. Hours range from 5-15 hours/week in-season (excluding travel). Travel is required for games and tournaments. Occasional telework may be permitted.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership and Coaching (50%)

• Provide overall leadership and direction for the UW Wheelchair Basketball program.
• Recruit, retain, and support student-athletes  
• Plan and conduct team practices, competitions, film review sessions, and team meetings.
• Develop and implement training plans, competitive strategies, and player development.

Program Administration and Operations (25%)

In collaboration with the Adaptive Recreation Lead:

• Coordinate team logistics, including travel, scheduling tournament participation, equipment management, and apparel procurement.
• Manage and oversee the program budget including purchasing and operational planning.
• Plan and implement camps, clinics, and special events.
• Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, student staff, and interns.
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with adaptive sports organizations, campus partners, and community stakeholders.

Community Engagement (15%)

In collaboration with the Adaptive Recreation Lead:

• Develop and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and alumni.
• Support and participate in fundraising efforts through donor engagement and sponsorship outreach.
• Represent the program at recruitment events, outreach activities, and public engagements.
• Promote awareness of adaptive sports and wheelchair basketball within the university and broader community.

University and Professional Engagement (10%)

• Develop academic and research partnerships.
• Participate in university committees and campus initiatives.
• Represent UW Adaptive Sports at professional and community events.

Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department.

• High School Diploma and two (2) years of playing and/or coaching Wheelchair Basketball experience; any other combination of relevant education and experience.

Additional Qualifications

• Experience with Head Coaching duties in Wheelchair Basketball.
• Demonstrated success in recruiting, program development, and mentoring student-athletes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Knowledge of wheelchair basketball rules, strategies, and best practices.
• Knowledge of NWBA regulations and adaptive sports programming.
• Ability to recruit, develop, and retain student-athletes.
• Ability to effectively teach and motivate student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Ability to build relationships with campus, community, and adaptive sports partners.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a positive student-athlete experience.
