Requirements
  • A high school diploma, General Educational Development credential, or equivalent working knowledge is required.
  • Current basic life support certification is required.
  • Current certification as a surgical technologist is required.
  • Where applicable, registration with the state regulatory agency is required.
  • At least 2 years of operating room experience is required.
  • The candidate must be able to scrub proficiently on a minimum of 2 surgical specialties.
  • The candidate must have manual dexterity and be able to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations.
  • The candidate must be conscientious, organized, and orderly and able to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient.
  • The candidate must stay abreast of new developments in the field.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies, ensuring instruments are in good working order, reviewing case carts, troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment, making minor adjustments or contacting biomedical equipment staff, and planning ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs by passing instruments, retracting tissue, and operating equipment during surgery; maintain competency to scrub for all surgical specialties.
  • Demonstrate aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout procedures; dispose of sharps and trash, place used supplies into case carts for processing, participate in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges, and prepare instruments for cleaning after each case.
  • Ensure surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate.
  • Assist with operating room turnover between cases and participate in stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning operating rooms.
  • Participate in or lead the training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students, as assigned.
  • Provide business support to the department, including administrative tasks, when needed.
  • Perform all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
  • Provide customers of Foundation Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating core and leader behaviors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology is highly preferred.
