Requirements
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or a related field, or equivalent years of experience in a related field.
  • Five years of experience in landscape maintenance with four years of landscape supervisory experience.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with university staff and contacts.
  • A stable work history and work ethic.
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • A Class C operator's driver's license.
  • A current three-year driving record from the current state of residence.
  • A Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License, or the ability to obtain one within six months.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying and adverse weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely around landscaping equipment, chemical fumes, biohazards, electrical and mechanical hazards, and other listed working conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain university landscapes to established standards, including turf, shrubs, irrigation systems, and hardscape.
  • Direct several landscaping crews in performing landscaping tasks.
  • Maintain detailed records, employee sign-in sheets, vehicle mileage logs, and daily labor records in UT Works.
  • Monitor the UT Works workbench and complete appropriate work orders.
  • Purchase supplies and materials for project installation and university landscape functions in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Maintain crew work schedules and complete routine paperwork.
  • Complete semiannual and annual performance evaluations.
  • Complete and approve weekly electronic time reports and verify daily labor in UT Works.
  • Support campus events, including commencement, football home games, and other sporting events, by attending meetings, working overtime, coordinating labor, and providing other support as needed.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, ensure crew members wear required PPE, follow safety rules, and maintain safe working conditions.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and departmental personnel on budgeting, planning, and implementation of landscape maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Perform mowing, edging, planting, irrigation repair, fertilization, pruning, and overall landscape upkeep.
  • Manage staff assignments, equipment, materials, and available resources to support long-range landscaping goals and departmental objectives.
  • Perform other related duties and occasional overtime as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in Horticulture or a related field.
  • More than eight years of experience in landscape maintenance.
  • More than four years of supervisory experience.
  • Specific training, coursework, or credentials in the grounds and landscape trade, such as college courses, ISA, PGMS, TCEQ, or TNLA.
  • Experience working in a university or municipal setting.
  • Intermediate-level experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of work-order management systems and software.
  • Successful completion of a leadership development program.
