Requirements
  • Enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral degree program (MSW, MFT, PhD) that is eligible for licensure to provide psychotherapy by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners, or the Board of Psychology.
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet application.
  • Ability to observe, evaluate, document and communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to accept supervision and work cooperatively as a team member with co-workers as well as with the client and community resources.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and the biological, psychological and social models.
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking skills in decision making situations, good organizational and record keeping skills, and good independent judgment.
  • Knowledge of psychotherapy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of multidisciplinary team and family dynamics.
  • Ability to be flexible with scheduling and prioritization of tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Provides individual, group and family therapy to persons with a developmental disability who are diagnosed with severe mental illness.
  • Utilize professional education and training to diagnose and treat the clients’ mental illnesses.
  • Provide psychotherapy to empower clients to identify and manager their psychiatric symptoms to enable them to be maximally functional in the larger community.
  • Constantly assess clients for potential harm to self, harm to others, or potential victimization and take appropriate measures to maintain safety. This includes, initiate involuntary hospitalizations when necessary to maintain safety.
  • Use professional training and credential to advocate for clients with other agencies, educate other agencies to recognize and deal with the needs of clients who have a developmental disability and are diagnosed with a mental illness.
  • Develop relapse prevention strategies with clients and their support systems to prevent future psychiatric hospitalizations and loss of community placements.
  • Participate as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team designed to maximally meet the psychiatric and psychological needs of clients.
  • Regularly attend training to update and keep current skills and maintain license.
  • Maintain appropriate treatment records and documentation as required.
  • Other duties as assigned to assure efficiency of the program.

Advancing opportunities for neurodiverse students: Hope and San Jose State University at TASH Conference. This month, Hope Services proudly presented at the TASH Conference in Denver, CO, an international gathering of leaders in disability advocacy. Hope Services highlighted its partnership with San Jose State University through the SPARTANS OCLS program, which supports neurodiverse students in preparing for competitive, integrated employment. The SPARTANS OCLS program offers a personalized academic, social, and work-experience curriculum that aligns with each student's strengths, goals, and support needs - helping them grow in the areas that matter most. Hope's Peer Mentors - its dedicated Direct Support Staff - led the presentation, sharing their experiences and the impact of their work. Panelists included Alex, Catherine, Anna, Nhi, Katherine, and Prabhav, a Hope client and program participant who represented students on the panel. members of the Hope Services team. Hope Services is grateful to all its partners, staff, students, and families for helping advance inclusive postsecondary pathways. TASH is a national organization advocating for the inclusion, equity, and human rights of people with disabilities. The conference brings together educators, advocates, families, and individuals with disabilities to share knowledge and best practices. Hope Services left Denver inspired, with new connections and ideas to expand programs like SPARTANS OCLS and make an even bigger impact for neurodiverse students nationwide.
