Requirements
  • Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist training program or equivalent combined education and experience.
  • A minimum of three years of related operating room experience.
  • Proficiency in using operating room computer systems and/or personal computer applications to carry out position responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical products, instruments, and equipment.
  • Ability to concentrate and prioritize in a distracting environment.
  • Ability to work at a quick pace.
  • Ability to work in a surgical services environment.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements, including frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking, lifting over 10 pounds, and occasional lifting exceeding 50–100 pounds.
  • Constant use of hearing, sight, and speech; frequent use of smell and touch; frequent keyboard and telephone use; and constant concentration and problem solving.
  • Influenza vaccination is required as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to operating room staff by planning, coordinating, maintaining, and controlling operating room equipment, materials, and instruments.
  • Provide training to operating room staff on the proper use of equipment.
  • Collaborate with surgeon office staff, operating room staff, Central Sterile staff, and outside vendors regarding operating room equipment.
  • Carry out or coordinate routine and ad hoc equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Function as a Surgical Technologist as needed and assigned.
  • Provide functional or technical supervision of employees in the same or related classifications, with supervisory responsibility limited to occasional direction, guidance, and explanation.
  • Onboard new staff and students and work with the educator to provide an orientation rotation.
  • Develop and maintain inventory par levels, review stock usage, and process special orders with the relevant operating room and Central Sterile managers.
  • Assist with preference card development and maintenance.
  • Establish instrument set protocols for responsible services.
  • Collaborate with service Team Leaders and Central Sterile and operating room managers to revise instrument sets and improve instrument set utilization.
  • Assist with material usage evaluation by outdating non-moving inventory, identifying duplicate supply items, and recommending cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Research requests for new and special-order equipment, materials, and instruments and assist with trials and evaluations of new products.
  • Act as liaison between Central Sterile and operating room staff.
  • Establish instrument set preparation protocols with Central Sterile and provide training on those protocols as needed.
  • Create and maintain an equipment reference manual for the assigned service group.
  • Conduct in-service training for assigned operating room service group staff on new and existing equipment, instruments, and materials.
  • Serve as a resource to the Manager and team members on the use of assigned group equipment, instruments, and materials.
  • Orient and precept new employees and ensure the orientation program remains current.
  • Communicate with surgeons, surgeon office staff, operating room staff, ancillary departments, and management about case scheduling, special orders, equipment, and instrumentation issues.
  • Obtain and process special schedule requests.
  • Review future schedules to ensure all special requests are fulfilled.
  • Communicate scheduling-system constraints involving equipment or instrument loaners, repairs, special requests, and time frames to appropriate staff.
  • Organize and plan scheduled cases and set daily priorities.
  • Check case carts for completeness and ensure special items are available.
  • Ensure special-order materials are available when needed and billed appropriately.
  • Assist with assembling and operating equipment to ensure patient, staff, and surgeon safety.
  • Assist with equipment and instrumentation setup and operation for various cases.
  • Promote minimal lapse time between patients.

Beth Israel Lahey Health rolls out Heidi's AI scribing to all physicians after 90% report better patient presence

Beth Israel Lahey Health is rolling out Heidi's ambient AI scribing tool to all its physicians following a successful trial across its facilities. The health system, which serves over 6,000 providers across 14 hospitals and 175 primary care practices, prioritises addressing physician burnout, with nearly half of US physicians reporting burnout. During a six-month trial offering Heidi to 1,000 providers, the majority adopted the technology. Survey results showed 89% were satisfied with note quality, 90% felt more present with patients, 74% reduced after-hours work time, and 82% experienced reduced cognitive load during visits. The implementation demonstrates how ambient AI can deliver immediate relief to physicians whilst benefiting patients and the healthcare system. Heidi supports over 2 million consultations weekly globally and has raised $96.6 million from investors including Point72 Private Investments and Blackbird.
