Requirements
  • Equivalent of four years of high school education required

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, and heel stick) according to established procedure.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws and ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to laboratory testing, prioritizing STAT draws within 10-15 minutes of request and transporting STATs immediately for trauma or disaster cases; other STATs within 15 minutes of draw; routine hourly.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions, including registering patients, verifying information, performing order entry with no errors, generating collection lists, NCC lists, and adding or canceling tests.
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload.
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments to ensure an orderly workflow, including assisting with blood-drawing procedures on morning rounds and informing floors of missed patients or difficulties, and informing the supervisor of problems obtaining specimens.
  • Under supervision, helps train new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties, assisting in training departmental procedures and acting as a resource to new employees.
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures.
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and job-related hazards; attends safety education programs; maintains work area and equipment in required condition; operates equipment safely; demonstrates proper body mechanics.
  • Follows hospital exposure control plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens; demonstrates knowledge of protective barrier equipment, ensures a safe environment with appropriate control measures; attends annual education programs; wears clean gloves for all draws; disposes of needles in appropriate containers; disposes of gloves in biohazard container; follows safety dress procedures.
  • Readily accepts changes in assignment and performs work at the appropriate skill level; may perform higher or lower level work as workload dictates.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment, including maintaining confidentiality and presenting neat appearance; maintains open communication and works to foster professional relationships.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works as part of a department/unit team to meet goals, participates in staff meetings, supports hospital mission and policies, utilizes automated systems for inter- and intra-department communication, and completes work assignments on time.
