Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Maintain required education and training documentation in record management systems to apply as a Temporary Registered Alcohol & Drug Peer Support Specialist within one month of hire.
  • Attest to one year of recovery as defined by Alcohol and Other Drug Education regulations.
  • Zero to one year of full-time experience working with individuals receiving treatment for a mental health, substance abuse, intellectual disability, or physical health condition.
  • Ability to provide nurturing attention and care to individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate with verbal and nonverbal individuals.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Teaching skills.
  • Patience and empathy.
  • Maturity and judgment.
  • Provide activities intended to assure successful community living through utilization of skills training.
  • Use psychiatric rehabilitation techniques to teach and assist clients with improving daily living skills, self-monitoring symptoms and side effects, emotional regulation skills, crisis coping, and interpersonal skills.
  • Document services in alignment with clients’ individualized, comprehensive Treatment Plans, with interventions specifically addressing progress toward chosen and relevant Treatment Plan objectives.
  • Understand normal growth and development, culture and ethnicity considerations, mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder diagnoses relevant to the age groups and populations served.
  • Manage client caseloads, client services, and activities to maximize direct-care client time and reach expected productivity targets.
  • Understand the role of OTRs to appropriately represent client needs for Community Support Authorization services required for authorization.
  • Provide formal training to Community Support Providers and Community Support Specialists and/or serve as a mentor or shift leader.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Hold a valid driver's license.
  • Provide proof of automobile liability insurance.
  • Maintain a positive driving record.
  • Lift up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May frequently lift patients.
Responsibilities
  • Teach, model, and coach activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, housekeeping, meal preparation, money management, educational and vocational goal setting, and nutrition needs.
  • Monitor performance of activities of daily living skills and provide therapeutic feedback.
  • Plan and facilitate community-based activities, including medical appointments, grocery shopping, leisure, recreation, and socialization.
  • Facilitate access to community resources, including Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, school, and job placement.
  • Contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment by practicing verbal de-escalation and, when authorized, other behavior-management techniques.
  • Integrate clients into the community and educate community members about people with disabilities and the organization's services and programming.
  • Collaborate with community systems on behalf of individuals served, including schools, landlords, families, transportation providers, and employers.
  • Provide transportation using an organization van or personal vehicle while following standard safety practices, and teach and facilitate use of public transportation systems.
  • Provide personal care as needed, including personal hygiene, toileting, laundry, meal preparation, and safe eating techniques.
  • Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed.
  • Supervise self-administered medication according to the applicable clinical program's protocols.
  • Identify assigned clients' food and medication allergies and exercise reasonable care to avoid allergen exposure.
  • Communicate information relevant to care, treatment, and services with staff members and, when authorized, non-organization providers.
  • Document services and care provided by completing attendance records, daily logs, shift or progress notes, incident reports, and time reports in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of protected health information consistent with organizational procedures and state and federal law.
  • Attend and participate in required staff and service-planning meetings and trainings.
