Requirements
  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 12+ years of professional experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional electrical design experience developing complex mixed-signal printed circuit board assembly designs using professional electronic computer-aided design tools.
  • Experience testing and debugging hardware in a laboratory environment using standard electronic instrumentation.
  • U.S. citizenship, lawful U.S. permanent residency, or qualifying refugee or asylee status is required for compliance with U.S. export control laws.
  • Expertise designing high-density printed circuit boards with fine-pitch ball grid arrays, high-speed differential pairs, and mixed-signal architectures using modern electronic computer-aided design tools.
  • Expert understanding of system-level design considerations for programmable devices such as systems-on-chip, field-programmable gate arrays, and microcontrollers.
  • Ability to design precision electronics with tight noise and ripple specifications and make tradeoffs among size, weight, power, cost, and performance.
  • Ability to define and implement controlled-impedance structures, signal-integrity strategies, power-distribution networks, grounding schemes, and electromagnetic-interference/electromagnetic-compatibility-aware layout practices.
  • Ability to use a product lifecycle management system to manage printed circuit board assembly designs, including creating and managing Engineering Change Orders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across engineering teams.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with physicists, electrical, mechanical, software, and optical engineers to translate system and schematic requirements into electronic designs for quantum instruments.
  • Own end-to-end development of complex printed circuit boards, including gathering requirements, designing schematics and layouts, coordinating fabrication, and verifying design performance.
  • Assist with system integration and testing to ensure instrument specifications are met.
  • Update and refine printed circuit board designs, development processes, and engineering procedures.
  • Support manufacturing operations by troubleshooting customer-reported issues, developing test verification and assembly procedures, and ensuring boards meet yield, quality, and testability targets.
  • Assist with electronic board bring-up and debugging activities, document printed circuit board rework, and track issues.
  • Use electronic test and measurement equipment to characterize and verify board performance.
  • Maintain accurate and current design documentation in a cloud-based product lifecycle management system, including revisions and Engineering Change Orders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Altium Designer.
  • Expertise in Altium Designer for schematic capture, printed circuit board layout, library management, and output generation.
  • Experience designing and implementing radio-frequency circuits on traditional printed circuit boards or ceramic substrates.
  • Experience integrating electronics with high-precision photonic components such as lasers, acousto-optic modulators, and photodetectors.
  • Knowledge of thermal analysis and designing printed circuit boards with thermal considerations, including heatsinking, copper pours, thermal vias, and component derating.
  • A foundation in defining, simulating, and verifying application-specific integrated circuit designs.
  • Professional experience in the precision sensor sector, including atomic clocks or inertial navigation system instrumentation.
