Requirements
  • Current Texas Board of Nursing license (or Compact State) as a Registered Nurse; OR Temporary Texas RN License with permanent Texas license within 90 days upon hire
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification within 7 days of hire
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language to perform the essential functions of the job
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a customer service oriented manner
  • Demonstrates expertise in operating the electronic medical record
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team and patients and their families
  • Strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Demonstrates proficient time management skills
  • Ability to lead and participate in staff development activities and clinical preceptorships
Responsibilities
  • Lead unit and shared governance activities and serve as charge nurse as needed
  • Assess the unit's needs related to practice and improvement opportunities and act as clinical resource for unit and hospital staff
  • Coordinate unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management
  • Model compassionate communication with physicians and interprofessional health care team and provide leadership at the bedside, unit, service line, and across the institution
  • Lead patient and family-centered care standards and mentor others regarding specialty populations
  • Develop, update, and communicate a plan of care in partnership with patient, family, and interprofessional health care team using the nursing process; prioritize care based on patient needs and preferences; advocate for patient/family
  • Develop and implement effective patient teaching strategies and assess patient comprehension
  • Drive department activities to improve department score for patient satisfaction
  • Provide care as staff nurse leader for complex patients and lead interprofessional team in implementing plan of care; manage assignment of complex patients and unit demands; respond to Rapid Response/CERTs and emergency codes
  • Model standards of care, regulatory requirements, and professional practice; lead improvements in patient safety and contribute to department and hospital standards
  • Lead and identify opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement; investigate evidence-based practices; lead initiatives to improve quality and safety scores; audit plans of care and other areas
  • Model independent time management to minimize overtime and collaborate to improve patient throughput
  • Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets and mentor others; improve documentation, decrease length of stay, and optimize efficiency
  • Expand nursing knowledge and coach staff to grow; serve as clinical resource; develop and disseminate educational resources and programs to improve quality and professional practice
  • Foster identification and implementation of innovative solutions to improve patient care or unit operations; lead or participate in unit projects and shared governance
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
