Requirements
  • The candidate must have successfully completed a state-approved school of medication administration.
  • The candidate must carry a current acknowledgment card or certification issued by a state agency.
  • The candidate must be willing to abide by restrictions placed on the job by the state agency.
  • The candidate must be a certified nursing assistant.
Responsibilities
  • Work under the supervision of a licensed vocational nurse or registered professional nurse.
  • After authorization by the facility’s licensed nurse or the resident’s treating physician, administer as-needed medications.
  • Organize assigned medication duties to pour, pass, and document all routine prescribed medications, and give as-needed medication only upon instruction from the licensed nurse.
  • Document all as-needed medications according to state standards in all areas of the chart.
  • Observe and report residents’ medication reactions and side effects to the facility’s charge licensed nurse.
  • Take and record vital signs before administering medications that could affect or change vital signs.
  • Personally prepare permitted regularly prescribed medications, administer them, and document them in the resident’s clinical record.
  • Administer oxygen through a nasal channel or non-sealing face mask only in an emergency, then immediately notify the licensed nurse on duty or on call and document the activity and notification.
  • At the charge nurse’s discretion, count narcotics, administer routine prescribed narcotics, and document them on the individual and medication sheets.
