Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience through work or personal projects.
  • At least 1 year of AI-focused experience, ideally within a product environment.
  • Strong understanding of Computer Science topics such as optimization and algorithms.
  • Understanding of Python and SQL code and the ability to retrieve and store data safely through a back end.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and back-end concepts sufficient to prototype, test, and evaluate integrations.
  • Experience with cloud services, specifically Amazon Web Services, including S3 and Lambda Functions, for scalable back-end AI solutions.
  • Experience with computer vision or AI image recognition applications, including at a prototyping or evaluation level.
  • Meaningful exposure to civil engineering, transportation infrastructure, or geospatial data sufficient to critically evaluate AI outputs in these domains and communicate with domain experts.
  • Capacity to communicate solutions with teammates.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the domain bridge between civil or transportation engineering knowledge and AI capabilities by evaluating whether AI outputs meet real-world infrastructure standards and directing the team accordingly.
  • Guide teams on prompting techniques, model capabilities, and domain-specific fine-tuning.
  • Help lead efforts to make models perform as intended, including enabling models with tool use and other techniques to optimize large language model performance.
  • Work with the Data team and specific datasets for continued pre-training, reinforcement learning from human feedback, in-context learning, and other applications.
  • Lead AI image recognition and computer vision strategies for infrastructure asset data extraction, assessing model approaches, overseeing implementation, and validating outputs against domain benchmarks.
  • Contribute to fine-tuning strategies for transportation- and infrastructure-specific models by collaborating with the Research team on domain adaptation, benchmarking, and model evaluation.
  • Evaluate and recommend third-party AI tools, application programming interfaces, and foundation models relevant to Citian's use cases, balancing build-versus-buy tradeoffs with Engineering.
  • Own and manage the application of AI to quality assurance and quality control processes by directing strategy, evaluating outputs for domain accuracy, and iterating with the Data team to improve data quality and integrity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on implementation experience with RESTful APIs and back-end integrations.
  • Experience with cloud services, specifically Amazon Web Services, including S3 and Lambda Functions, for scalable back-end AI solutions.

Citian builds software for public-sector transportation agencies to improve safety and mobility through data-driven insights. Its cloud-based SaaS platform collects and analyzes roadway data, delivering dashboards and reports that help transportation leaders understand traffic patterns, incidents, and asset performance. Unlike more general analytics tools, Citian focuses on the needs of government transportation managers and delivers tailored insights to support decision-making. The company aims to save lives and optimize transportation management by providing clear, actionable data to road planners and operators.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Citian's 2026 conference presence signals active pipeline-building across DOTs and MPOs.
  • Waymo pothole data creates demand for ADAPT-style systems to operationalize new signals.
  • Seed backing from Automotive Ventures and Founder Collective supports hiring and product expansion.

What critics are saying

  • Transportation software rivals like Cambridge Systematics and Logiroad already sell into agencies.
  • Citian depends on public-sector procurement cycles; missed RFPs delay growth into 2027.
  • If agencies prefer consulting-heavy incumbents, Citian's software-first wedge gets boxed out.

What makes Citian unique

  • ADAPT combines predictive crash modeling, digital twins, and infrastructure planning for agencies.
  • Citian reports over 500 governments nationwide using its safety and asset software.
  • Google for Startups selected Citian for its 2026 AI Academy infrastructure cohort.
