Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Five years of experience as an ophthalmic technician or technologist after certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified Ophthalmic Technician, or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist.
  • Current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified Ophthalmic Technician, or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist through the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Required immunizations and screenings must be completed before placement, including tuberculosis screening, influenza, Tdap, HIV testing as applicable, measles-mumps-rubella, varicella, and Hepatitis B.
  • The employee must work full-time on-site; telework is not permitted.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the optometrist or ophthalmologist with duties appropriate to the employee’s certification level.
  • Instruct patients about eye care and contact lens handling.
  • Prepare patients and perform as a surgical assistant during ophthalmic surgeries and minor surgical procedures as required.
  • Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications, supplies, and equipment for physician use.
  • Check medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.
  • Maintain surgical instruments and equipment and perform required periodic calibration checks.
  • Perform user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment.
  • Perform and document calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment according to equipment specifications.
  • Assist with administrative and clinical duties when not actively providing patient care.
  • Maintain cleanliness according to infection-control guidance.
  • Perform weekly or as-needed inventory.
  • Provide direct clinical, surgical, and administrative support to the optometry and ophthalmology team.
