Wall Street's biggest banks pour billions into AI with mixed results on returns

Wall Street's largest banks are investing billions in AI, though questions persist about returns on these massive expenditures. JPMorgan leads with a nearly $20 billion annual technology budget, claiming its $2 billion AI investment has already matched costs in savings. The bank tracks how its engineers use AI tools and has deployed its proprietary platform to over 200,000 employees. Goldman Sachs spent $6 billion on technology this year, whilst announcing AI-driven efficiency measures that will slow hiring and reduce some roles. Citigroup takes a bottom-up approach with 4,000 employees trained as AI stewards, reporting nearly 90% staff usage of AI tools. Wells Fargo and Bank of America are also deploying AI across operations, from wealth advisory to code development. Morgan Stanley's partnership with OpenAI saved developers over 280,000 hours in the first half of last year. Despite widespread adoption, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon noted banks don't "uniquely benefit from AI" since everyone now uses it.

JPMorgan values Knicks at $11.75B after Lakers deal sets NBA franchise record

JPMorgan has valued the New York Knicks at $11.75 billion following a record Lakers transaction, creating a notable gap with Madison Square Garden Sports' market capitalisation of approximately $9.8 billion. The comparison is significant because MSG Sports owns both the Knicks and the NHL's New York Rangers. The valuation follows an agreement by Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner to acquire the Lakers at $12.5 billion. JPMorgan analyst David Karnovsky cited the Lakers as the most relevant comparison for the Knicks given their large media market and similar revenue structure. MSG Sports' fourth-quarter revenue rose 37% to $278.7 million, driven by playoff revenue, league distributions and sponsorship. However, the Knicks are not currently for sale, meaning the elevated valuation does not directly translate to shareholder value.

JPMorgan raises Microsoft price target to $625, sees up to $41B Copilot revenue by 2027

JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee raised his December 2027 price target for Microsoft to $625 from $550 on 13 August, maintaining an Overweight rating. The target implies roughly 30% upside from Microsoft's trading price of approximately $492. The upgrade follows Microsoft's strong fourth-quarter results on 29 July, which sent the stock up more than 27%. Azure grew 43% in constant currency, crossing $100 billion, whilst Intelligent Cloud revenue hit $39.3 billion, up 32%. Chatterjee estimates Copilot could add between $24 billion and $41 billion in revenue. GitHub Copilot alone has 50 million users. The analyst expects Azure growth to accelerate as AI infrastructure spending rises, with margins stabilising as buildout matures. JPMorgan's target sits below Wells Fargo's $700 Street-high but above the 34-analyst average of $564.49.

Chase opening new Alabama location, looks to expand to 5 more cities by year's end.

Chase opening new Alabama location, looks to expand to 5 more cities by year's end. It's the bank's 16th location in the state. Aug 14, 2026 - 14:44 City & Local Guides Chase is expanding its footprint along the Alabama Gulf Coast, officially opening its newest bank branch in Foley. Located at 2400 S. McKenzie Street, the facility marks the company's 16th location in the state, with a grand opening celebration set for Tuesday. Ambitious expansion plans. This opening is part of a larger, aggressive growth strategy for JPMorgan Chase. The banking giant has committed to triple its Alabama presence by 2030, aiming for 35 branches spanning from Muscle Shoals to Mobile. The momentum is expected to continue rapidly throughout the remainder of this year, with five additional locations planned for Montgomery, Mobile, Daphne, Decatur, and Huntsville. Serving the community. The new Foley branch is equipped to provide a full suite of services, including personal banking, lending, and wealth management. "Investing in Foley allows Chase to be a resource for growth for our families and our community," said branch manager Kaitlin Phillips. "We look forward to meeting our neighbors face-to-face during life's biggest moments - buying a car, a home, starting a business or planning for their kids' education." A bright future for Alabama. The bank's commitment to the state goes beyond new storefronts. Earlier this year, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon dedicated significant space in his annual shareholder letter to the potential of the region, noting that Alabama's future looks incredibly bright. This confidence has spurred several strategic initiatives, most notably the American Dream Initiative (ADI). Through this program, Chase aims to boost local small businesses by providing enhanced access to capital, training, and financial tools. Dimon, who toured Alabama last year during a multi-state visit, remains a key driver in the bank's Southern expansion, as reported by 205focus.com.
