Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • At least 15 years of underwriting experience is required.
  • Experience managing other underwriters is required.
  • Experience underwriting submissions and quotes applicable to travel, travel medical, and blanket accident business segments is required.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, are required.
  • Travel of 25–30% is required.
  • Strong problem-solving, risk-management, and analytical skills are required.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with brokers, producers, and clients are required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Proven leadership ability, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to multitask while emphasizing quality and customer service are required.
Responsibilities
  • Drive profitability, retention, and written-premium goals for the department.
  • Make independent decisions within the underwriting letter of authority and maintain proper file documentation.
  • Assist in developing annual business goals for assigned agents and producers.
  • Analyze results and maintain accountability of agency partners within the department.
  • Lead the underwriting team through communication, delegation, mentoring, and ongoing professional growth and development.
  • Drive business and team results through accountability.
  • Monitor market trends and the competitive landscape, and identify emerging threats and opportunities for the department.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of department products and services and clearly articulate the department's value proposition.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on strategic planning.
  • Perform underwriting audits and evaluate portfolio performance using profitability metrics, overseeing execution to align with business-unit objectives.
  • Attend necessary due-diligence reviews for new Managing General Underwriters.
  • Participate in training and initiatives.
  • Onboard new clients and accounts.
  • Manage reinsurance relationships and processes.
