The Senior Community Engagement Specialist plays a strategic and collaborative role within the Office of Community, Access, Retention, and Empowerment (CARE) in the College of Engineering. The role will develop, direct, and manage student enrollment, community engagement, and retention services programs for pre-enrolled and enrolled College of Engineering (COE) students, aligning with and extending the University's mission and values into K-12, Land-grant, 2-year, and 4-year institutions. This position will establish and foster ongoing dialogue with public school districts where Ohio State campuses are located, prioritizing school districts with high economic need and limited STEM resources and University-affiliated pipeline and pathway programs, including but not limited to College Credit Plus, Buckeye First, Buckeye Bridge, the Young Scholars, and other institutions with expertise in supporting first-generation and high economic need students. The specialist highlights the varied pathways into engineering careers for pre-enrolled students and provides advising support to pre-enrolled students with university credit. The role also supports large-scale undergraduate outreach and recruitment events.
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean and other Community, Access, Retention, and Empowerment (CARE) staff, the position will lead programming to support undergraduate enrollment, which may include, but not be limited to, hosting overview sessions, facilitating workshops, or teaching a 1-credit-hour course to recruit undergraduate students to high demand majors with growth capacity. Collaborate with CARE Connected Student Organizations (CCSOs), undergraduate and graduate students, to develop and deliver outreach programs to increase awareness of the College of Engineering programs to high schools.
In addition to outreach and community engagement, the Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting engagement data to inform continuous improvement and strategic planning. The Community Engagement Specialist will conduct surveys and assessments to evaluate program effectiveness and student impact, ensuring that CARE initiatives remain responsive and impactful.
The position may supervise 1–2 staff or student employees and coordinate volunteers, alumni, and faculty. May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, and travel. The position involves significant interaction with other people, including students, staff, faculty, and the public, and a remote or hybrid schedule is limited.
Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering and/or STEM related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Six years or more of experience in managing retention and student success programs in higher education. Excellent communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills; experience in developing and implementing program evaluations and reports; ability to work effectively with a variety of constituents and collaborators; success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities and stakeholders. Experience in staff supervision and advising student organizations Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse high performing team; ability to work effectively with a variety of constituents and collaborators; must pass a criminal background check.
Desired: Master's degree in engineering or STEM field; 8-12 years of experience demonstrates experience leading and/or serving in a supportive role successfully in student support services, academic success programs, or higher education administration; experience working with undergraduate students, preferably in STEM disciplines; and knowledge of best practices in student retention, first- and second-year experience programs, and academic engagement; experience working with student organizations in an advisory role; experience in higher level administration in an educational institution; experience with formal group instruction, preferably to college students.
