GDIT files notice of potential layoff of 87 DC employees. The defense contracting giant has announced several other reductions in the region recently, but specifics are unclear because of the WARN Act. A defense tech giant could be laying off nearly 100 employees working in DC - but due to government contract timelines and legal requirements, it's unclear if that will actually happen. In a filing, General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) in Northern Virginia reports 87 employees will be laid off by mid-summer. Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, employers of 100 or more workers must give 60 days notice. So government contractors waiting to hear back about a project (where speed is rare) may file to avoid legal liability even if there's a chance the contract will go through. These kinds of notices are also often common during government shutdowns. It's unknown if a specific pending contract led to the GDIT notice. GDIT spokesperson Jay Srinivasan declined to comment about the filing. Earlier this month, the government contractor announced layoffs of nearly 100 employees in Maryland. In December, GDIT sent notices to 54 employees working in Rockville. GDIT is a business unit of aerospace and defense company General Dynamics, which is headquartered in Reston and has around 26,000 employees across the globe. The unit focuses on AI, cybersecurity and cloud computing for several federal agencies and local governments. That includes contracts with the Department of War, Department of Homeland Security and the Environmental Protection Agency, per its website. It's not clear how many staff are based in the DMV. The company in January announced a $120 million task order for cybersecurity services to the Air Force, and a $988 million contract to modernize Navy systems. A new defense systems innovation center built by GDIT also opened in Springfield in December. GDIT boasts $52.6 million in annual revenue as of the end of 2025, per PitchBook. Defense is generally booming under the Trump administration. Companies and startups working in national security and defense technology have been scoring historic private investment over the past few years.
