Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Two years of clinical experience are required.
  • A current Registered Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan is required.
  • Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC is required within six months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring for Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum unit coordinators at BMH and BBC.
  • Department-specific requirements such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support may apply.
  • The role requires the ability to use job-relevant software such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • The role requires the ability to organize and analyze data.
  • The role requires fluent spoken and written English.
  • The role requires interpretation of regulatory standards and assessment of their impact on the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and clinical liaison support to staff, physicians, and management.
  • Serve as a role model, mentor, coach, and resource person to staff while maintaining unit standards and teamwork.
  • Assist managers in attracting, developing, maintaining, and retaining qualified staff members.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, performance monitoring and evaluation, problem solving, employee counseling, staffing, payroll, and budget activities.
  • Maintain a safe care environment that meets customer-service and quality standards.
  • Implement new processes and monitor ongoing processes.
  • Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care.
  • Conduct or facilitate audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Coordinate day-to-day unit operations, including patient placements and staff assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel and ensure appropriate personnel utilization.
  • Coordinate department staff schedules with manager input as needed.
  • Adjust daily staffing to meet needs, including volume changes and call-in replacements.
  • Facilitate staff attendance at organizational committees and meetings.
  • Manage staffing levels to help the department achieve its budget.
  • Participate in projecting staffing needs and creating staffing plans with the manager or director.
  • Approve or deny paid time off.
  • Follow organizational staffing policies and communicate with staff about scheduling requests and issues.
  • Act as a clinical expert and resource for staff questions about job performance and departmental processes.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards and provide input into them.
  • Act as the first responder for clinical and service-recovery issues.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to personnel accountable to the nurse manager.
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback and immediate coaching to staff.
  • Monitor staff performance daily and work with the manager to develop and follow up on personal development plans.
  • Evaluate personnel performance and communicate behavior or performance issues to the manager.
  • Participate in employee discipline processes and employee evaluations as directed.
  • Co-facilitate shared-governance meetings and mentor the staff chair.
  • Facilitate charge-nurse and other unit meetings and report to the nurse manager.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including assisting with interviews.
  • Create and support an environment that encourages innovation and creativity.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Formal or informal leadership experience is preferred.
  • Advanced nursing-specific certification is preferred.
