Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Five years of related experience is required, including data entry and specimen handling.
  • Experience with neonatal and pediatric phlebotomy is required.
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements for serum, plasma, whole blood, tissue, and body fluids is required.
  • Knowledge of specimen collection containers and media is required.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to use Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems and office software are required.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers is required.
Responsibilities
  • Organize work schedules and create work assignments for phlebotomy staff.
  • Review team member timecards for accuracy and management approval.
  • Conduct quality assurance audits of staff performance.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and document quality improvement activities, policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Train, orient, guide, and mentor team members, students, and support staff.
  • Provide feedback to management on team member performance and developmental needs.
  • Assist in interviewing and hiring new staff.
  • Perform phlebotomy and specialized specimen collection procedures, including collecting and processing biological specimens and handling STAT samples.
  • Perform Laboratory Information System functions, register patients, order tests, and maintain patient and testing records.
  • Resolve complex problems and routine matters and serve as a liaison among team members, management, and physicians.
  • Monitor and adjust activities to support patient throughput and patient experience.
  • Identify patients and accurately label, process, organize, order, and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Investigate specimen and requisition discrepancies, determine root causes, and take corrective action.
  • Maintain laboratory safety and assist with departmental safety initiatives and education.
  • Provide leadership on efficient time utilization and participate in inventory management.
  • Generate and communicate ideas that improve quality or service.
  • Work Monday through Friday on a 10-hour day-shift schedule, with flexibility between 5:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. and occasional weekends as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A course in phlebotomy or venipuncture is preferred.
  • Previous experience leading a team is preferred.
  • PBT (ASCP) certification is preferred.
  • CPT certification through ACA, AMT, or NCCT is preferred.
