Requirements
  • The candidate must be currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation, with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect, or misappropriation of property.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be maintained or completed by the end of new-hire orientation.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety precautions applicable to hospital work.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of the hospital's organization and physical layout.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of infection-control procedures and safety precautions.
  • The candidate must be able to withstand prolonged standing and walking and frequently perform bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
  • The candidate must be able to frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.
  • The candidate must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • The candidate must be able to document and communicate pertinent information using computer or paper documentation tools.
  • The candidate must have working knowledge of principles and practices for providing nonprofessional bedside patient care.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
  • Obtain and record patient data for medical records and inform the registered nurse or licensed practical nurse of collected information.
  • Administer routine and special treatment and personal-care procedures, including feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed-making, ambulation assistance, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination.
  • Provide additional care required to meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.
  • Reinforce patient teaching instructed by registered nurses or providers.
  • Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by positioning patients, changing nonsterile dressings, and weighing patients.
  • Take and record vital signs, record intake and output, and apply ice bags.
  • Note and report changes in patients' conditions.
  • Turn and position patients, set up and feed patients as necessary, and provide fresh drinking water.
  • Perform fingerstick blood-glucose testing after appropriate training, document the results, and notify the registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.
  • Assist with patient admission, discharge, and transportation.
  • Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
  • Clean the assigned area and stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
  • Maintain required skills validation and attend educational offerings as part of professional development.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Perform clean dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old when assigned.
  • Maintain the patient and family environment, perform general unit upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and order supplies as needed.
  • Document patient care accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Respond appropriately during emergency situations.
