Requirements
  • A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license or multi-state license is required, or the ability to obtain one before the start date.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
  • An associate degree in nursing is required at minimum.
  • The ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English is required.
  • Applicable unit-specific certifications may be required, including Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Intermediate Fetal Monitoring.
  • The position requires clear and accurate communication, delegation to and receipt of delegation from team members and students, conflict management, and the ability to work under time pressure.
  • The position requires exposure tolerance to body fluids, disease, infection, chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions while using required protective equipment.
  • The position requires physical ability to perform medium work, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, prolonged standing and walking, kneeling, bending, sitting, stooping, and running in an emergency.
  • The position requires stamina to work prolonged shifts and the ability to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential, and every other weekend is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
  • Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate care while maintaining professional nursing practice standards and positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Supervise LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs, and other non-licensed staff.
  • Apply safety principles when performing care and identify and reduce unsafe practices and risks or hazards affecting patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
  • Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
  • Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on teams, assisting with measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
  • Perform initial and annual competency assessments per job class.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, telephone, texting, and the intranet as required.
  • Adhere to DCH behavioral standards, Health System policies and procedures, and Employee Handbook compliance requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
