Requirements
  • Significant experience delivering primary design and engineering for high-voltage substation projects up to 400kV.
  • Strong knowledge of United Kingdom Transmission and Distribution standards and specifications.
  • Experience leading engineering teams and reviewing technical deliverables.
  • BEng or BSc in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in high-voltage substation primary design and engineering.
  • Experience producing designs, calculations, reports and drawings associated with substation projects up to 400kV.
  • Strong understanding of International Electrotechnical Commission standards and industry best practice.
  • Experience working to National Grid and distribution network operator specifications.
  • Experience managing engineering teams and coordinating project delivery.
  • Experience working alongside computer-aided design technicians using AutoCAD, Revit or similar software.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the delivery of primary engineering design for high-voltage substation projects up to 400kV.
  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers and computer-aided design technicians.
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy and consistency of project deliverables.
  • Support and develop junior engineers through coaching and technical guidance.
  • Provide technical oversight and approval of engineering work.
  • Take ownership of high-voltage plant CDAE responsibilities on National Grid projects where applicable.
  • Prepare, review and approve primary layouts and elevations.
  • Prepare, review and approve Single Line Diagrams.
  • Prepare, review and approve transformer sizing and specifications.
  • Prepare, review and approve gas-insulated and air-insulated switchgear designs.
  • Prepare, review and approve shunt reactors, neutral earthing resistors and reactive or capacitive compensation schemes.
  • Prepare, review and approve switchroom layouts.
  • Prepare, review and approve current-transformer sizing calculations.
  • Prepare, review and approve busbar designs and short-circuit force calculations.
  • Prepare, review and approve busbar and connector specifications.
  • Prepare, review and approve low-voltage alternating-current systems for substations.
  • Prepare, review and approve earthing studies and earth return current calculations.
  • Prepare, review and approve insulation coordination studies.
  • Prepare, review and approve mechanical interlocking schemes.
  • Prepare, review and approve equipment technical specifications.
  • Prepare, review and approve type registration documentation.
  • Prepare, review and approve Factory Acceptance Testing activities.
  • Manage programme, budget and quality requirements for engineering deliverables.
  • Prepare, review and approve feasibility studies, outline designs, detailed designs and technical reports.
  • Review and approve construction drawings and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Support bid and tender submissions.
  • Maintain updates to the Business Development Tracker.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews and technical workshops.
Desired Qualifications
  • MEng or MSc in Electrical Engineering.
  • National Grid high-voltage plant CDAE accreditation.
  • Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards chartership.
  • Experience supporting bids, tenders and work-winning activities.
