Requirements
  • Graduated from an accredited school or college of mortuary science
  • Current Funeral Director license within the practicing state
  • Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required to operate company owned vehicles
  • Cognitive Ability including reason, plan, identify problems, learn quickly, learn from experience, and appropriately apply learning to new situations
  • Process and results oriented, motivated to keep projects moving ahead by removing obstacles and exploring alternatives
  • Must have a positive attitude, a drive to continually advance your understanding of the industry and business, and is highly self-motivated
  • Ability to build professional and trusting business relations
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Public speaking skills with the ability to influence and gain consensus
  • Proficient using databases in automated processes
  • Proficient MS Office skills
  • Work environment can be indoors and outdoors in all seasons; professional business attire required when in contact with families
  • Scheduling and coordinating arrangements with deceased next of kin including obtaining contact information and discussing needs; arranging appointment and email confirmation
  • May perform removals or transfers adhering to company standards
  • Care for deceased in a respectful manner and update removal status in proprietary software
  • Greets next of kin and escorts to meeting space; initiates and facilitates Arrangements Conference; discusses life insurance and benefits; promotes services and merchandise
  • Transitions Arrangement Conference to Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor and may perform FSA/FSC responsibilities in absence
  • Reviewing and authorizing merchandise and service contract revisions
  • Presides as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services; ensures compliance with contract and presence at graveside services
  • Inspecting deceased and ensuring proper attire, makeup, and removal of personal belongings prior to burial; communicating concerns to preparation staff
  • Interacts with family to fulfill death care requests and obtain leads for pre-need services
  • Perform a variety of event planning responsibilities including resource planning and ordering of music, flowers, catering; producing MeM products such as scanning photos, ordering memorabilia, creating electronic presentations, obituaries, and on-line memorials; preparing event space
  • Attending community or charity events to represent and promote the location or market
  • Works under general guidance; new associates are learning to apply licensure; collaborates with peers; ensures compliance with regulations; takes initiative; notifies manager when workload is light; volunteers for additional work
  • Additional responsibilities as requested or assigned
Responsibilities
  • Arrangements Conference: Receives or initiates call to deceased next of kin; obtains contact information; schedules Arrangement appointment; emails appointment confirmation
  • May perform removals or transfers adhering to company standards and processes; Cares for deceased; Updates removal status in proprietary software
  • Greets next of kin and escorts to meeting space; Initiates and facilitates Arrangements Conference; discusses available life insurance and benefits; promotes funeral, cemetery, and crematory services and merchandise
  • Transitions Arrangement Conference to Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor to present cemetery property and merchandise options, pricing, and contract completion; In absence of an FSA/FSC, may perform FSA/FSC responsibilities
  • Directing Services: Confirms authorization to proceed with service Arrangements; Presides as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services; shall be present for graveside services and verify personal belongings are removed prior to burial
  • Visually inspects deceased and adjusts casket dressing, attire or makeup; communicates concerns to preparation staff; inspects Services Arrangements against contractual arrangements and next of kin expectations; initiates corrective action
  • Interacts with the family to fulfill death care requests; obtains leads for pre-need services
  • Event Planning: Perform a variety of event planning responsibilities including resource planning and ordering of music, flowers, or catering; Produces MeM products; prepares event room; post-event cleanup and return of items
  • Attends community or charity events to represent and promote the location or market
  • General: Works under general guidance; maintains regulatory compliance; discusses assignments and deadlines; seeks guidance; volunteers for additional work
  • Minimum requirements to perform this role include the items listed in Education & Licenses, Experience, and Knowledge, Skills & Abilities, and Work Conditions as detailed above.

Well-known funeral directors shift careers to Highland Park Funeral Centre. Dean Gemmiti and Carl Brown are leaving Comstock/Kaye after a combined 80 years of service. A shakeup in the local funeral home business has led to two well-known funeral directors changing locations. Dean Gemmiti and Carl Brown have joined the Opus Tribute Group at Highland Park Funeral Centre after a combined 80 years at Comstock/Kaye Life Celebration Centre. The move comes after Houston-based Service Corporation International (SCI), owners of Comstock/Kaye, purchased Ashburnham Funeral Home and Reception Centre and Community Alternative Funeral and Cremation Services. Mike Davies is a sports director and reporter at the Peterborough Examiner.
