  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Phlebotomist certification is required.
  • The ability to perform venipuncture, phlebotomy, and finger sticks is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills are required.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records is required.
  • Interpersonal skills, compassion, critical thinking, problem solving, infection control procedures, bedside manner, attention to detail, procedural skills, organizational skills, quality focus, and basic computer skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Serve patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
  • Verify test requisitions by comparing information with the nursing station log and bring discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
  • Verify patient identification and explain sampling procedures to patients.
  • Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • Maintain specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
  • Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting collection times, and maintain daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Adhere to professional standards, institutional policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Reassure patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and apply dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
  • Maintain an organized and clean workspace.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience as a phlebotomist technician is a plus.
