Requirements
  • Master or PhD in Control Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics or a closely related field
  • 2 to 5 years of professional experience in prosthetics, orthotics, exoskeletons, portable robotics or rehabilitation robotics
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement and validate control strategies for motorized prostheses and orthoses of the lower and upper extremities, including impedance control, admittance control, finite state machine architectures and model predictive approaches
  • Translate biomechanical models of human joint function (including moment-angle-velocity envelopes, joint couplings and gait phase dynamics) into control requirements and implementable regulator structures
  • Integrate AI/ML components in control pipelines: use of classification networks for activity and terrain recognition, recurrent models for gait phase prediction, and data-driven approaches for parameter adaptation
  • Develop and apply state estimation methods, including Kalman Filter variants and sensor fusion algorithms, to estimate joint states, user intent and environmental context from device sensor data (IMU, force/torque, EMG, encoder)
  • Design and conduct experimental validation protocols on physical hardware, including lab tests and studies with participants in collaboration with partners from clinical and biomechanics domains
  • Collaborate with biomechanists and clinical partners to define functionally meaningful control targets, differentiating normalization of gait patterns from user-specific optimization goals
  • Evaluate sensory feedback modalities (force, vibrotactile, proprioceptive substitution) and assess their role in closing the human-device control loop
  • Document control architectures, test results and validation outcomes in technical reports
  • Conduct structured literature reviews and competitive analyses to keep abreast of the state of the art in prosthetic and orthotic control, wearable robotics and human movement science
  • Present results to internal stakeholders, research partners and potentially to a clinical audience
  • Collaborate with regulatory and product development teams to ensure control concepts comply with applicable safety standards (EU-MDR, IEC 60601-1, ISO 13482)

Blue Arbor secures $5M from Ottobock to advance FDA breakthrough prosthetic control system

Blue Arbor Technologies has secured a $5 million investment from Ottobock, the global prosthetics leader, to advance its RESTORE Neuromuscular Interface System. Ottobock will lead Blue Arbor's Series A financing and hold a board seat. The FDA breakthrough-designated RESTORE System provides a fully implanted neuromuscular interface connecting advanced prostheses directly to patients' residual muscles and peripheral nerves. It enables independent, simultaneous control of fingers, wrist and elbow, with trials demonstrating stable signal capture for over five years. In December 2025, surgeons at the Medical University of Vienna completed the first-in-human RESTORE procedure. Within days, the patient demonstrated functional use with an Ottobock prosthetic. Founded by Drs Paul Cederna, Theodore Kung and Alex Vaskov, Blue Arbor has been awarded over $60 million in research grants and published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.
