Day to Day Job Duties
The duties will include but not be limited to:
Planning, Programming and leading age-appropriate activities for 5–12-year-olds in a recreation setting
Supervision of children
Planning programs to include games, sports, arts and crafts, and special events.
Assisting the Activity Center Leader with site supervision, discipline and all other aspects of programming
Some locations may require additional experience or qualifications.
In addition to the above duties, the Activity Center Leader will provide supervision, mentoring and coaching to part time employees, volunteers and interns.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
Title placement will be based on demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities and position availability.
Activity Center Leader position will require possession of a valid Medical Administration Training (MAT) certification, or the ability to obtain the certification within six (6) months of employment. Medical Administration training-Diabetes (MAT=D) certification may be required based on participant needs and placement.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours, overtime, splits shifts or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.
Schedule
During the school year, employees must be available to work five days a week, Monday –Friday – primarily 2:20pm – 6:15pm. If during employment, someone is no longer available for five days, they may be moved to a sub list.
Hours - Average scheduled hours up to 27 hours per week.
This position could provide direct childcare licensed by the State Licensing standards. Convictions of any barrier crime set forth in Virginia Code 63.2-1719 shall be automatic disqualification for employment for this position.
Training Starters
As a condition of employment, all Out of School Time employees must attend the following training events held at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building: (Dates provided after completion of onboarding screenings)
-P&R Connection (Department Orientation). Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday.
-OST New Employee Orientation. This is a 4-day classroom training is scheduled from Monday – Thursday from 11:45 am and end by 5:00p.m.
-Additional training will be schedule to meet program standards.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years old. High school or GED, plus three (3) months or at least four hundred (400) hours of related experience in such positions as teacher/substitute, coach, recreation program leader, camp counselor, youth leader, scout leader, or childcare provider, either in a paid or volunteer capacity or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Some Locations may require a current and valid driver’s license. At programs providing direct childcare, convictions of any barrier crime set forth in Virginia Code §63.2-1719 shall be an automatic disqualification for employment in this position. At childcare program locations licensed by the Virginia State Department of Social Services additional qualifications are determined by the current state standards and guidelines.
Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Successful completion of pre-employment physical.
