- The candidate must be at least 18 years of age and have graduated from high school or obtained a GED.
- The candidate must complete 48 college units, pass the CAPE/Instructional Aide proficiency exam, or complete 12 units in Child Development or a related field, including Arts, Early Childhood Education, Education, Humanities, Physical Education, Psychology, Recreation, Sociology, or Theater.
- The candidate must have 1–2 years of advanced experience working with participants ages 0–21 who have special needs, social-emotional needs, or behavior-support needs.
- The candidate must obtain fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation before working, with additional CACI clearance depending on the department of hire.
- The candidate must obtain TB test clearance within 60 days before employment or before working at a YMCA program.
- The candidate must complete Child Abuse Prevention Training before working with program participants.
- The candidate must obtain Adult and Child/Infant CPR/AED and First Aid Certification within 30 days of hire from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety & Health Institute.
- The candidate must be able to work with participants who require diapering or lifting services.
- The candidate must have the verbal, visual, auditory, and physical abilities to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in an emergency.
- The candidate must be able to work with a culturally diverse community.
- The candidate must be able to observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
- The candidate must have the physical ability to lead group activities and perform related physical skills.
- Facilitate the inclusion of participants in a typical program day.
- Work individually with participants who have special needs.
- Ensure participants’ safety and well-being, including physical and personal-care hygiene.
- Implement behavior strategies that support participants in the program.
- Provide continual supervision and comfort to participants and serve as a leader and positive role model.
- Facilitate activities, academic enrichment, games, crafts, and other program activities.
- Create an age-appropriate learning environment that fosters creativity and individuality.
- Maintain daily communication with supervisors, staff, participants, and parents.
- Provide resources and effective strategies that support participants to other staff.
- Follow and maintain YMCA standards, goals, and objectives.
- Maintain ongoing participant documentation for services and accountability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience with behavior-modification strategies and reinforcement systems.

San Diego, CA – June 28, 2023 – The YMCA of San Diego County proudly announces the appointment of Margie Newman Tsay to a two-year term as chair of the nonprofit’s board of directors, effective July 1.
The Center is partnering with San Diego Youth Services and the YMCA of San Diego to provide case management, transportation assistance, employment support, outreach to youth on the streets and basic needs such as food, showers, mail service, laundry and clothing.
