Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • The candidate must be a graduate of a Medical Assistant Program, a graduate of the Med Ed Program, or have one year of clinical experience.
  • The candidate must obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • The candidate must complete a state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal background check for regulated areas.
  • The candidate must be able to lift and move materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • The candidate must be able to position and lift patients and stand or walk for 4 to 12 hours per day.
  • The candidate must be able to work in an environment with biohazards and communicable diseases and respond quickly to varying provider and patient demands.
Responsibilities
  • Perform duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic setting.
  • Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
  • Support medical staff in meeting patient needs and ensuring efficient outpatient unit operations.
  • Assist providers with requisitions and forms for patient examinations or testing and help patients and providers with medical office visits.
  • Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of the attending provider.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
  • Obtain and document patient specimens as ordered.
  • Document and report test results to the medical provider.
  • After training and skills testing, perform assigned or ordered point-of-care testing and maintain quality-control testing and logs.
  • Schedule ancillary testing and diagnostic or therapeutic procedures as needed.
  • Act as a chaperone during medical examinations.
  • Ensure medical records and test results, including records from referring physicians, are available for visits and inspect records for correct order and completeness.
  • Monitor the nurse call system and relay telephone information to appropriate staff.
  • Provide information and assistance to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Generate patient charge data according to outpatient procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, prepare orders, report supply needs, and demonstrate appropriate use and care of equipment, printers, embossers, and computers.
  • Schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using a computerized system according to outpatient clinic policies and procedures.
  • Assure patient registration, collect identification and billing information, enter data into the computer, obtain charts and fee sheets, and obtain release-of-information and treatment-consent signatures.
  • Assist with money deposits, late-night coverage, and unit correspondence using computer software.
  • Process and mail letters to patients.
Desired Qualifications
  • Registration or certification as a medical assistant.
  • One year of experience as a medical assistant or in patient care.
