Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school or college of mortuary science.
  • Current Funeral Director and Embalmer dual license within the practicing state.
  • Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required to operate company owned vehicles.
  • Cognitive ability including reasoning, planning, identifying problems, learning quickly, and appropriately applying learning to new situations.
  • Process and results oriented mindset with the motivation to remove obstacles and explore alternatives.
  • Positive attitude and self-motivation to continually advance understanding of the industry and business.
  • Ability to build professional and trusting business relations.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to push and pull up to 150 pounds on flat and inclined flooring or ramps.
  • Ability to sit or stand for continuous periods of up to 6 hours per day and frequently climb stairs.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, including frequent nights and weekends.
Responsibilities
  • Facilitate funeral arrangement discussions with deceased next of kin and preside over visitation, funeral, and graveside services in accordance with family wishes and legal regulations.
  • Receive or initiate calls to deceased next of kin to obtain contact information, discuss needs, and schedule arrangement appointments.
  • Perform removals or transfers of the deceased adhering to company standards and update status in proprietary software.
  • Initiate and facilitate Arrangements Conferences to assess needs, discuss insurance and veteran benefits, and promote funeral, cemetery, and crematory services and merchandise.
  • Transition Arrangement Conferences to Funeral Services Counselors or perform those responsibilities in their absence.
  • Review and authorize merchandise and service contract revisions.
  • Preside as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services and ensure presence during the placement of the casket in a grave, crypt, or burial vault.
  • Visually inspect the deceased, adjust dressing or makeup, and ensure service arrangements meet contractual obligations and family expectations.
  • Perform event planning tasks including resource planning, ordering music and flowers, creating electronic presentations, writing obituaries, and setting up event rooms.
  • Perform attendant duties such as parking lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, or courier as needed.
  • Clean and embalm bodies following company processes and hazardous waste procedures, including replacing bodily fluids, performing restorations, and applying cosmetics.
  • Verify appropriate casket and lining according to contract, dress the casket, and update status in proprietary software.
  • Maintain the preparation room, clean equipment, dispose of hazardous waste, and inventory supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with all mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations within the funeral establishment.
  • Attend community or charity events to represent and promote the location or market.

Well-known funeral directors shift careers to Highland Park Funeral Centre. Dean Gemmiti and Carl Brown are leaving Comstock/Kaye after a combined 80 years of service. A shakeup in the local funeral home business has led to two well-known funeral directors changing locations. Dean Gemmiti and Carl Brown have joined the Opus Tribute Group at Highland Park Funeral Centre after a combined 80 years at Comstock/Kaye Life Celebration Centre. The move comes after Houston-based Service Corporation International (SCI), owners of Comstock/Kaye, purchased Ashburnham Funeral Home and Reception Centre and Community Alternative Funeral and Cremation Services. Mike Davies is a sports director and reporter at the Peterborough Examiner.
