  • A bachelor's degree in nursing is required.
  • Graduation from a Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Education Program is required for the acute care setting.
  • Two years of relevant nursing experience are required, along with unit-specific performance competencies.
  • Prior wound care experience is required or expected for the role.
  • A current registered nurse license in the State of Florida is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider Certification is required.
  • Wound nurses must maintain current CWOCN or CWON certification through the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board.
  • Registered nurses who graduate from the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Education Program have one year after completion to sit for the certification exam.
  • The nurse must maintain professional development and continuing education.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the clinical resource and consultant for the acute and rehabilitative care of patients with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems.
  • Provide direct patient care to individuals with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, skin disorders, and incontinence.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles across the life span and assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs.
  • Use an evidence-based process to evaluate current practice and make recommendations for best practice.
  • Create an environment that facilitates collaboration to improve quality of care.
  • Advocate for the specific patient population.
  • Maintain a safe and caring environment for patients and families.
  • Participate in preceptor-ship training for the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Education Program.
  • Ensure the maintenance and provision of equipment and supplies, including new product evaluations for skin, wound, ostomy, continence, prevention, and support-surface products.
  • Develop and provide ongoing staff in-service education.
