CPA Trendlines webinar on pricing strategies. Led by Michelle Weinstein, founder of The Abundant Accountant By CPA Trendlines In partnership with CPA Trendlines, Canopy has scheduled a free webinar aimed at helping accounting and tax professionals overcome their reluctance to raise client fees. The session, "How to Overcome the Fear of Raising Your Prices & Get Paid Your Worth," will be led by Michelle Weinstein, founder of The Abundant Accountant. The webinar will focus on pricing strategies designed to help firms move beyond hourly billing, communicate value more effectively, and increase revenue without adding clients or hours worked. Attendees will learn how to identify the beliefs that keep firms from charging appropriately, reframe services around client outcomes rather than hours worked, and evaluate the financial impact of strategic fee increases. Weinstein, a sales strategist and business coach for accounting professionals, says clients of her consulting practice have collectively added more than $38 million in revenue by improving pricing and sales processes.
Canopy brings AI Tax Workflow under one roof. % buffered Current time09:36 It is generated by AI Canopy has launched Tax Workflow Automation, an AI-powered system to streamline tax filing by joining client intake, tax preparation, review, signatures, payment, and final delivery into one platform. The system, built to resolve issues arising from fragmented systems and manual handoffs, consists of three interconnected modules: Smart Intake, Smart Prep, and Smart Delivery, aiming to save time, reduce errors and improve efficiency in the taxation process for accounting firms. Tax season often runs like a relay race where every runner uses a different track. One system collects documents. Another prepares the return. A third handles signatures. Billing waits somewhere near the finish line, wondering whether anyone remembered it. Canopy wants to put the entire race on one course. On July 15, 2026, Canopy launched Tax Workflow Automation, an AI-powered system connecting client intake, tax preparation, review, signatures, payment, and final delivery inside the Canopy platform. The product is not simply another AI tax preparation tool. Its broader aim is to automate the work surrounding a return, where fragmented systems and manual handoffs often slow firms down. The real target is workflow friction. Canopy has divided the system into three connected modules: Smart Intake, Smart Prep, and Smart Delivery. Each addresses a different point in the engagement lifecycle, but the larger value comes from connecting them. Smart Intake collects client information and documents. Smart Prep extracts and maps tax data to create a draft return. Smart Delivery handles the completed return, signature process, invoice, payment, and final document release. For accounting firms, this structure matters because tax workflow problems rarely exist in isolation. A delayed return may begin with an incomplete organizer. A billing delay may result from a missing signature. A reviewer may lose time because uploaded files were poorly labeled. One small breakdown can hold up the entire engagement. By keeping the process within Canopy, firms may reduce the number of systems staff must monitor and the number of times information must be moved manually. That could improve task ownership, reduce duplicated work, and give managers clearer visibility into what is complete, overdue, or stuck in the pipeline. Smart Intake goes beyond file collection. Smart Intake is built to reduce the back-and-forth that commonly occurs before preparation begins. The system can use prior-year client information to build customized questionnaires and document checklists. As a client answers questions, the requested items change in real time. That is a meaningful step beyond sending every client the same static organizer. A taxpayer who reports a new rental property, business activity, or investment account may receive additional requests connected to that answer. Clients see a more relevant checklist, while firms may receive a more complete file earlier in the process. Canopy also says uploaded documents can be identified, renamed, matched to specific requests, and organized according to the firm's rules. The company estimates Smart Intake can save between 20 and 50 minutes per client. At first glance, that may not sound like a hill of beans. Across 500 clients, though, it represents roughly 167 to 417 hours of potential time savings. That is several weeks of staff capacity recovered from document administration alone. The practical question is whether firms will standardize their processes enough to capture those savings. Automation works best when naming conventions, task ownership, and intake rules are already clearly defined. A messy process does not become clean simply because AI enters the room. Smart Prep moves staff toward review. Smart Prep addresses one of the most repetitive parts of tax preparation: manually transferring information from source documents into a return. Selected documents move through Canopy's connected preparation process, where AI extracts and maps the information to create a draft Form 1040 return. Canopy states that the process can prepare returns four times faster and reduce manual work by up to 70%. Those figures point to a potential change in how firms allocate labor. Instead of using professional time for basic data entry, firms may shift staff toward reviewing classifications, verifying amounts, identifying missing information, and evaluating tax positions. That does not eliminate human involvement. It changes where human involvement begins. The distinction is important because AI extraction tools can misread documents, place amounts in the wrong fields, or overlook unusual facts. A draft return is still a draft. The practitioner remains responsible for determining whether the return is complete and accurate. Canopy appears to recognize that concern. The platform keeps AI-generated output transparent and editable before anything reaches the client. That control may be one of the suite's more important features. Firms can use automation without turning the process into a black box. As the old professional saying goes, trust but verify. Delivery connects signatures with cash. The system reads the finalized return PDF, extracts delivery details, prepares the client-facing workflow, and places required electronic signature fields. The materials provided specifically reference Form 8879, the IRS e-file signature authorization commonly used for individual returns. Clients can then review the return, sign required forms, and pay the invoice through a guided process inside the Canopy client portal. This is more than a convenience feature. Delivery is often where completed work sits idle. A return may be technically finished but still waiting for a signature, payment, or client confirmation. When those steps are handled through separate systems, staff must manually track which requirement remains outstanding. Bringing signatures, payment, and document delivery into one flow may shorten the time between completing the return and closing the engagement. Canopy also allows firms to restrict access to final documents until the invoice is paid. What forms does it cover? Based on the product information provided, Smart Prep is currently described as generating draft Form 1040 individual income tax returns. Smart Delivery is also designed to identify and place electronic signatures required for the delivery process, including Form 8879. The supplied materials do not confirm full preparation support for Forms 1041, 1065, 1120, or 1120-S. Firms considering the platform should verify supported return types, source documents, tax software integrations, and entity coverage directly with Canopy before assuming broader form compatibility. That limitation does not reduce the potential value of the workflow suite, but it does define its immediate use case. Firms with a large individual tax practice may see the clearest near-term benefit. Firms serving more partnerships, corporations, trusts, or estates will need to examine how much of their work can currently move through the automated preparation process. The bigger play is firm capacity. Canopy's Tax Workflow Automation reflects a broader shift in accounting technology. The industry has spent years focused on automating calculations and data entry. The next battleground is the chain of administrative work that surrounds professional services. That includes collecting documents, updating tasks, assigning work, preparing signature requests, issuing invoices, and following up with clients. Each activity may take only a few minutes. Together, they can eat a firm's lunch during busy season. Canopy's suite will not remove the need for tax expertise, review standards, or professional accountability. It may, though, help firms reserve more of their capacity for the work clients actually value. The most important question is not whether AI can prepare part of a return faster. It is whether the entire engagement can move from first request to final payment with fewer delays, fewer errors, and less staff intervention. That is the bet Canopy is making. For firms still managing tax season through disconnected tools and manual reminders, it may be worth a closer look. Until next time...
