About Dexterity
At Dexterity, we believe robots can positively transform the world. Our breakthrough technology frees people to do the creative, inspiring, problem-solving jobs that humans do best by enabling robots to handle repetitive and physically difficult work.
We’re starting with warehouse automation, where the need for smarter, more resilient supply chains impacts millions of lives and businesses around the world. Dexterity’s full-stack robotics systems pick, move, pack, and collaborate with human-like skill, awareness, and learning capabilities. Our systems are software-driven, hardware-agnostic, and have already picked over 15 million goods in production. And did we mention we’re customer-obsessed? Every decision, large and small, is driven by one question – how can we empower our customers with robots to do more than they thought was possible?
Dexterity is one of the fastest growing companies in robotics, backed by world-class investors such as Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Obvious Ventures. We’re a diverse and multidisciplinary team with a culture built on passion, trust, and dedication. Come join Dexterity and help make intelligent robots a reality!
About The Role
As a Mechatronics Engineer at Dexterity, you will play a key role in developing mechatronic assemblies spanning the entire robot stack, from motor controllers to sensing and data acquisition. In this software heavy role, you will be required to translate Dexterity’s hardware needs into rigorous hardware and embedded software design specifications, design systems to match those specifications, prototype and test your designs, then develop and document the necessary manufacturing and test procedures to produce and maintain these devices at scale.
Candidates should have significant experience in designing and prototyping software to control mechanical and electrical systems, in both individual and cooperative roles. They should be eager to learn, constantly investigating new technologies, and continuously growing and mentoring their peers. A candidate’s work should reflect good design methodologies, a desire to create and adopt engineering best practices, and diligent attention to detail.
Day-to-day Responsibilities (does not include all responsibilities)
Work across multiple teams and engineering disciplines to facilitate the creation of hardware and software design requirements that fulfill product application needs.
Design software to control electro-mechanical solutions such as motor drive systems, electrical controlled pneumatics, physical sensing and acquisition systems.
Build software and drivers for the hardware to meet design requirements, providing an easy to use interface to high level software applications.
Prototype and test mechatronic solutions to quantify system performance
Develop and implement logging metrics for health monitoring of mechatronic systems.
Design and develop clean, reliable, and maintainable embedded systems code.
Write and maintain design documentation that clearly communicates device design, capabilities, and procedures.
Any other assignments as needed.
Be a driver and motivator for engineers across the org
Enable complex robotic systems to scale globally
Desired Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
BS/MS/Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
2 or more years of related work experience.
Strong knowledge of embedded C/C++ and Python. Experience with embedded programming
Strong understanding of fundamental classical controls concepts (e.g. PID, deadband, bode plots, etc.)
Strong mechatronic debugging skills. Familiarity with lab test instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies).
Experience using profilers and debuggers to optimize code
Experience building and maintaining production code
Familiarity with mechanical design (CAD, mechanical drawings) and rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, machine shop skills).
Fluent in datasheets.
Strong technical writing and verbal skills.
Experience with electronics for industrial automation (PLCs, functional safety modules, sensors, actuators).
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
● Stand/walk or sit for the majority of a workday.
● Apply physical mobility (reaching, bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, arm and leg extension) to perform all assembly production activities.
● Possess extensive arm and hand mobility, dexterity and strength to lift, hold, reach, carry, push and pull parts. Also able to move parts, tools, equipment and materials in and out of vehicles.
● Lift 40 pounds regularly; occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
● See and judge distances and space relationships to successfully complete detailed activities to fine tolerances, including reading written plans and other documents.
Base pay is one element of our Total Rewards package which may also include comprehensive benefits and equity etc., depending on eligibility. The annual base salary range for this position is from $100,000 to $160,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as years of relevant experience, skills, education etc. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
