Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Three years of relevant experience are required with an associate's degree, or one year of relevant experience is required with a bachelor's degree.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.
  • The candidate must be able to learn and perform daily small-animal mouse surgery, particularly the Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion model of ischemic stroke.
  • The candidate must perform surgical procedures in accordance with approved Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee protocols.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, design, execute, and manage research projects in a foundational biological and health science laboratory investigating translational neurosurgery.
  • Develop and implement study goals and objectives.
  • Design and conduct complex laboratory experiments using advanced molecular, cellular, or other specialized techniques.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret research data.
  • Assist in developing and refining methodologies, experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical approaches.
  • Establish appropriate controls, criteria, and research standards.
  • Critically review relevant scientific literature.
  • Support preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations for national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to project documentation.
  • Assist the principal investigator in preparing grant proposals for new or renewal extramural funding.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities and work assignments for postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and staff.
  • Oversee routine maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform mouse transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion surgeries as the primary daily responsibility.
  • Provide post-operative monitoring and care, including neurological scoring, wound care, weight tracking, and clinical assessment of recovery.
  • Manage and maintain the laboratory mouse breeding colony, including setting up and monitoring breeding pairs, weaning litters, and maintaining colony records.
  • Perform genotyping procedures to identify animals for experimental cohorts.
  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate researchers involved in animal colony tasks.
  • Assist with in vivo small-animal magnetic resonance imaging sessions, including animal preparation, anesthesia, positioning, physiological monitoring, and post-imaging recovery.
  • Support neurobehavioral testing, histological sectioning of brain and other tissue samples, flow cytometry tissue sample preparation, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction as needed.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and contribute to the collaborative research environment.
