Requirements
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent and complete 350 hours of CASAC schooling at the vocational or college level.
  • Hold a New York State Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or CASAC-T credential.
  • Have at least 6 months of experience as a counselor in the chemical dependency field.
  • Be adept at group counseling, completing patient assessments, providing lectures to patients, and completing appropriate discharge planning.
Responsibilities
  • Provide counseling services to inpatients in the inpatient rehabilitation program.
  • Assess patients for the diagnosis of alcoholism and other addictions, as well as other life areas affected by alcohol or substance addiction.
  • Document assessment results, treatment notes, patient progress, and other pertinent patient information in patient records.
  • Conduct weekly patient education lectures regarding recovery issues and other lectures required by the program.
  • Contact patients’ insurance carriers for concurrent reviews, communicate discharge plans and information within 24 hours of discharge, and document those conversations.
  • Communicate pertinent information to referral sources, probation, parole, child protective services, treatment courts, the primary counselor, and other program staff.
  • Initiate patient evaluations within 24 hours of admission.
  • Develop measurable and manageable goals for individual patients.
  • Participate in performance improvement efforts.
