Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline will close its vaccine production facility in Dresden, Germany by mid-2028, ending 115 years of operations. The site, which employs nearly 650 people, produces flu and hepatitis vaccines at a rate of 2 million doses weekly. GSK cited declining global demand and existing overcapacity as reasons for the closure. Future flu vaccine production will be consolidated at the company's facility in Ste-Foy, Canada. The Dresden plant was founded in 1911 by entrepreneur Karl August Lingner as the Saxon Serum Works. It was nationalised during East Germany's existence before British group SmithKline Beecham acquired it in 1992 following German reunification. The IG BCE trade union opposed the closure, warning that Saxony risks losing skilled industrial jobs and pharmaceutical production expertise.

Hutchmed, GSK ink $1.3B cancer drug deal. GSK gains rights outside Greater China to develop HMPL-A830 for KRAS-altered tumors. September 4, 2026 Associate Editor, Contract Pharma Hutchmed Limited has entered into an exclusive development and license agreement with a subsidiary of GSK plc, giving the GSK subsidiary rights outside Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to develop and commercialize HMPL-A830. HMPL-A830 is a first-in-class Antibody-Targeted Therapy Conjugate that combines a highly selective KRAS small-molecule inhibitor payload with an anti-EGFR antibody. Initial clinical development will focus on colorectal, pancreatic and lung cancers. The agreement includes a $110 million upfront payment and up to $1.295 billion in potential development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments, plus royalties on net sales. Colorectal, lung and pancreatic cancers have among the highest incidence of KRAS-altered tumors, and patients often lack safe, durable KRAS-targeted therapies. HMPL-A830 is designed to deliver a KRAS inhibitor directly to EGFR-expressing tumors while blocking EGFR and KRAS signaling to improve efficacy, durability and tolerability. Hutchmed will lead the global phase I development program, expected to begin in the second half of 2026. GSK will handle subsequent clinical development and commercialization outside Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. HUTCHMED Enters into Agreement with GSK for Novel KRAS-EGFR Cancer Therapy. 3 September 2026 HUTCHMED has entered into an exclusive development and licensing agreement with GSK for HMPL-A830, an investigational antibody-targeted therapy conjugate (ATTC) designed to target KRAS and EGFR in solid tumours. EGFR is an established driver of tumour growth in several solid cancers, including colorectal, pancreatic and non-small-cell lung cancers. It also plays an important role in resistance to KRAS-targeted treatments, particularly in colorectal cancer. Targeting both EGFR and KRAS is therefore intended to provide broader and more durable pathway inhibition. Under the agreement, GSK will receive worldwide development and commercialisation rights for HMPL-A830 outside Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. HUTCHMED will receive an upfront payment of US$110 million, along with potential development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments of up to US$1.295 billion and royalties on net sales. HMPL-A830 combines a selective KRAS small-molecule inhibitor with an antibody that targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). KRAS mutations are particularly common in colorectal cancer, lung adenocarcinoma and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Despite recent advances in KRAS-targeted treatments, many patients, particularly those with KRAS mutations other than G12C, continue to have limited treatment options. Resistance to existing therapies and toxicities associated with broader KRAS and RAS inhibition also remain challenges. HUTCHMED will lead the global Phase I development programme for HMPL-A830, which is expected to begin in the second half of 2026. GSK will take responsibility for subsequent clinical development and commercialisation activities outside Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The agreement marks HUTCHMED's first licensing deal with a global partner for an asset from its ATTC platform and expands GSK's oncology pipeline with a novel dual-targeting approach.
GSK shares fall: mRNA flu vaccine advances to next study phase. September 1, 2026, 11:12 a.m. GSK is making progress with the development of an mRNA-based flu vaccine. As the British pharmaceutical company announced, a late-stage study for the vaccine candidate will begin in September. In a mid-stage study with younger and older adults, the drug showed stronger immune responses compared with standard and high-dose flu vaccines, according to GSK. The vaccine was generally well tolerated. "Given one billion flu cases and up to 650,000 deaths worldwide each year, there is a need for next-generation vaccine approaches," said Sanjay Gurunathan, head of research and development for vaccines and infectious diseases at GSK.
