Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Process and order patient and physician orders according to the procedure manual.
  • Answer telephone calls in a friendly and caring manner.
  • Transfer calls to the appropriate associate or department.
  • Communicate with satellite laboratories and drawing stations regarding physician-order interpretation and specimen requirements.
  • Train and guide new laboratory associates.
  • Direct the phlebotomy team for STAT and now collections.
  • Communicate appropriately with adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients according to age-specific standards.
  • Operate pneumatic chutes and respond to them promptly.
  • Operate the telephone to minimize caller wait time and prevent dropped calls.
  • Operate hospital information system and laboratory information system computer systems according to the procedure manual.
  • Prepare, sort, and deliver patient reports to physician office boxes.
  • Fax reports to physicians' offices.
  • Telephone inpatient and outpatient critical-value results, including read-back, as needed by technicians.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory computer system.
  • Deliver specimens to the appropriate department.
  • Replenish outreach client supplies when needed.
  • Inventory and order office supplies.
  • Inventory and order computer system supplies.
  • Order inpatient and outpatient tests according to manual orders received.
  • Communicate report status with nursing units and physician offices as appropriate.
  • Perform clerical duties supporting laboratory testing, including workflow assistance, charge initiation, workload tallying, and blood-bank clerical responsibilities.
  • Sort physician orders and manually transport them to data entry.
  • Procure and process blood and body fluids for laboratory testing.
  • Work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on a varied shift schedule.
