Requirements
  • 10–12 years of engineering/design experience in the building design industry, including plumbing systems such as drainage, utility, pump, water-heater, and sizing work.
  • Experience with fire protection systems, hazard classifications, fire pump systems, and fire piping or sprinkler sizing.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer-aided drafting using AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical or fire protection system design and applicable codes.
  • Experience with plumbing and fire protection engineering calculation software, including HASS, Viking, Pipe Flow, or IPS calculation spreadsheets.
  • Experience with different piping materials and pressures for drainage, utility, and fire protection systems.
  • Four years of experience overseeing engineers and designers on project teams.
  • Ability to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift and move objects up to 25 pounds, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors, adhere to strict cleanroom gowning protocol, travel as required, access reliable transportation, and commute routinely to client sites.
  • Ability to work in safety-sensitive field environments and follow stated client-site safety rules.
Responsibilities
  • Work independently on assigned projects, either overseeing the entire design process or serving as a technical expert on specialized designs across concurrent projects.
  • Perform the Project Lead role through feasibility reports, building assessments, concept and basis-of-design reports, and detailed design and documentation.
  • Mentor, support, and guide early-career designers and engineers in project execution.
  • Assess project requirements, break projects into tasks, and work with the Project Manager to determine scope, budget, and staffing.
  • Write design scopes of work based on preliminary reviews and client meetings.
  • Prepare engineering studies and schematic designs for new systems.
  • Prepare reports, specifications, and plans, and support project construction.
  • Review and evaluate the operation of existing systems.
  • Work with code officials and other design professionals when building-code interpretation or exceptions are required.
  • Assign and review project design-team work, check progress, and produce drawing markups.
  • Communicate with clients and alert the Project Manager to scope changes or additional services.
  • Review contractor applications for payment and apply a thorough understanding of the construction process.
  • Coordinate project-document completion internally and externally with clients and other design professionals.
  • Assign and review plumbing design-layout drawings, including drainage piping, utility services, equipment layouts, and coordination with other trades.
  • Assign and review fire protection design-layout drawings, including fire-service piping layouts, hazard classifications, equipment layouts, and coordination with other trades.
  • Assign and review plumbing calculations for drainage systems, utility systems, and equipment sizing.
  • Assign and review fire protection calculations for fire protection systems and equipment sizing.
  • Assign and review specialized plumbing and fire protection drawings, including operations matrices, elevations, details, riser diagrams, and P&IDs.
  • Prepare or review construction budgets based on project experience and scope.
  • Promote and participate in developing company design and production standards.
  • Assist with design-staff education and development and serve as a resource for design questions.
  • Perform additional assigned tasks or special projects.
  • Travel to client sites and follow applicable safety rules; the position may require extended client-site assignments or overnight travel.
